Chapter 15 - My Ability...

Sunlight shone through the dorm room's window, illuminating every inch of the place, including the two boys' who laid against one another on the floor. They were seemingly asleep, and the only sound that could be heard throughout the room was the muffled noise of chirping birds and summer winds that came from the outside.

Suddenly, a "CAWK!" came from the window, causing Lachlan to jolt up awake from the floor.

As Lachlan awoke and still felt drowsy, he couldn't resist letting out a "yawn…" as he inspected the room he was in.

After just waking up, his memories were a little hazy, but as he recalled yesterday night, his eyes immediately became clear as every ounce of drowsiness washed away from him.

Seeing Oliver asleep next to him, he shouted, "Oliver!" in hopes of waking him up.

Unfortunately, his voice didn't do the trick, so he alternated to pinching his cheek, which made Oliver eventually open his eyes.

"Oh hey Lachlan…" mumbled Oliver, "Where are we?" he asked as a heavy yawn left his mouth.

"We're in the dorm room." Said Lachlan, "Are you okay?"

Oliver slightly chuckled and said, "Am I okay?" he lifted himself from the ground, but as he did, he let out a groan of pain, "I… I'm fine…."

He went to take a seat at the kitchen table on the left side of the room.

Lachlan hadn't noticed Oliver's state before, but he became a little worried when he did.

Oliver's usual healthy complexion and robust body that emanated liveliness was nowhere to be seen. Instead, his face had become deathly pale, and his body was looking leaner than before. There was also blood oozing out from the various gashes on his body that created a pool of crimson on the floor.

Just seeing this, Lachlan remembered that he had collapsed as soon as he came back to the dorm room and didn't have a chance to help Oliver out, which is why he was in this state. Still, looking at him now, Lachlan knew that even if he did help him out by applying first-aid, it wouldn't be of much help. The injuries on his body were too serious, and the first-aid packet provided in every room would do little to no help.

What he really needed was a trip to the infirmary to get patched up by an actual healer.

And If he went without it, it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say he would most likely die…

Just thinking of that possibility made Lachlan anxious.

It wasn't that he was attached to Oliver that made him anxious, even if his death would make him sad, but how he was going to explain a dead person in his room!

If that did happen, all signs would undoubtedly point to him as the culprit!

Lachlan didn't want that to happen, so he started to mull over what he could do.

"Should I take him to the infirmary?" he thought inwardly. That would be the most reasonable thing for anyone to do, but it was dismissed entirely when it came to Lachlan's head.

Lachlan wasn't a fool, and he understood that if he brought a high-leveled ability-wielder to the infirmary, then it would indicate that he had been in a fierce battle— especially so in the bloodied state he was in.

The academy authorities had definitely found the dead bodies yesterday night, and they were probably looking for the culprits actively as of now. Lachlan didn't know how they were going to pinpoint the culprits exactly, but he knew that if he did anything suspicious as bringing the high-leveled Oliver to the infirmary, they would definitely become the prime suspects.

"What are you thinking about?" asked Oliver suddenly, as he leered at Lachlan's pondering eyes from the seat next to him.

Lachlan was shaken from his arduous thoughts when Oliver spoke.

He looked towards him and began explaining. At first, he was a bit reluctant to do so, but knowing they were both entangled in this now, he felt like he could share his thoughts with Oliver.

Lachlan explained to him why he couldn't bring him to the infirmary, and he also told him his suspicions on how the school authorities would find the culprits.

"You're right," said Oliver, "If they don't find anything to track either of us with, then they'll probably search for someone with serious injuries or someone who misses the lessons the following morning."

"Yeah, that's what I'm afraid of…" replied Lachlan, with his lips taut together.

He hadn't thought as far as he should have done. Maybe after seeing Oliver's heavy injuries yesterday night, what he should have done was to kill him to not be left with this complication, but if he did that, his conscience would definitely take a heavy hit, and another problem would inadvertently arise from it. After all, Oliver was his dorm mate, and maybe he would become a probable suspect even sooner because of it.

Still, Lachlan knew better than to mull over the past and decided to think about how he mend could the present instead.

The two boys were left in deep thought, with their heads tilted downwards towards the floor.

Then, after a couple of seconds, Oliver suddenly raised his head and asked, with a bit of nervousness evident in his voice. "Hey, I was meaning to ask…."

Lachlan lifted his head.

"How did you hide your ability?" with his eyes looking at his watch, "…And why did you lie to me about being a cripple?" his jaw unwittingly clenching.

Lachlan was expecting to get hit with this question sooner or later, so instead of panicking, he answered, "Oliver… I didn't hide my ability, nor did I lie to you…."

Oliver's eye twitched.

He huffed, "What? I wasn't going to be that mad if you gave me a proper excuse, but that's the best you got?" his eyebrows knitted together, "You're just gonna deny it like that?!"

"Oliver," said Lachlan with a calm complexion and a solemn tone, "I didn't lie to you."

Oliver was slightly taken aback, and his bitter expression faltered a little.

The solemnness Lachlan exuded made it seem like he was telling the truth, and it made Oliver even more confused. "What do you mean? Are you perhaps trying to tell me that you acquired an ability yesterday?" with a hint of sarcasm in his voice.

"Yes." Answered Lachlan without missing a beat. "I stole somebody's ability yesterday."

Lachlan was still reluctant to tell someone about the system he acquired, so instead, he came up with an extremely believable lie— even if it still sounded out of this world.

Lachlan solemnly expanded, "You see, my ability is a little bit peculiar as compared to the norm… It allows me to steal other's abilities when I kill them…."

Oliver's eyes bulged, and his veins pulsed on his neck. He couldn't stop nervously swallowing, and his eyes froze open— becoming moist over time. His mouth hung agape, and he preserved that expression for a long time.

He was only shaken from his stupor when Lachlan asked, "Are you alright" after he had observed his frozen expression for over a minute.

"Show me, " said Oliver all of a sudden. "Show me the ability you have acquired."

Lachlan understood that it was hard to believe with just words, so after a second of closing his eyes, he summoned one of the abilities within his body that made his fist become covered with a golden force-field.

Seeing this, Oliver felt his world turn upside down. He had heard of all kinds of mysterious and powerful abilities from his father but never had he heard about one as strange as this one.

Not only was that what made him tremble, but the ability he had shown, "T-That a.. ability!"

Knowing where Oliver was going with this, he answered, "Yes, that's the ability of the boy you fought. I stole it before we ran off."
