Chapter 16 - RE:Birth - Resonance

Roman and Nero watched as Yeong, the prized son of his house and the de facto leader, fell to the hands of a creature that neither of them could ever understand. At the sight of Yeong's body disintegrating to ash, Roman let out a cry, one heard through the wasteland.

Zephyr grinned from the cry as he watched the creature's jaw collapse onto the student. The young man listened closely in the darkness of his office as the door closed. Light from a set of monitors illuminated the sight of his face for Emerys to see. The boy watched Zephyr's gaze absorb the information like a sponge.

"I wonder if it would be too much for us to put the other students through Limbo just to find those four?"

Emerys peered behind Zephyr's desk to watch as the feast continued. The creature continued biting at the skin of Roman right in front of Nero. He squirmed at the sight, yet now, of all times, Zephyr appeared unfazed.

"Tell me, when you were younger, did you play many games?"

Zephyr's eyes jumped from the screen to capture the sight of Emerys fuchsia irises shot around the room in confusion before focusing on his cold gaze that desired a simple answer. Emerys searched his mind like pages of a story only he could follow until letting his lips open.

"I… not too many of them, but there was always that one from Luxa about a prince serving his lord. I accidentally chose the hardest difficulty, but ended up getting more powerful gear whenever I pulled through battles."

"That's why I could care less about that Chimera escaping. That demon-born served its purpose quite nicely, I'd say. A mediocre Anima will now set the stage for the next set of Deadly Sins, so we can snuff them out even easier than it would be, anyway."

Emerys tilted his head at Zephyr's words as a question ate at his mind like how the Chimera began advancing on Nero, taunting him with the hope of escaping death as it snapped its fangs at him.

"How exactly will this reveal them?"

Like a faint heartbeat, a violet hue glowed along with Zephyr's eyes as he said the word.

"Resonance."

"Resonance?"

"Some nobles kept records of their interactions with the Deadly Sins over the ages. Many documented before the Deadly Sins rose and took the place of their predecessors, carried a distinct marking on their skin. A brand that some said linked the Deadly Sins together."

Zephyr watched as Nero was finally swallowed whole, bringing another odd reaction from the Chimera. Its skin wilted like flowers of ash giving birth to a form reminiscent of Lucas, yet maintained the ash skin and silver eyes. More of the crimson earth of Limbo lost its color as it dulled further into the dark grey.

"A lot of the information shared among nobles was skewed for a tactical advantage against them, sure, but no matter how many families I pressure, all reports point to a single truth—

From the screen two figures appeared before the Chimera, Emerys' gaze flared as he felt the odd splitting pain that he felt from before, souls compounding upon one another, within one laid thousands of lifetimes and Zephyr's words confirmed the thought in his mind.

—But...all of them agree when one of them willingly activates the power within the markings, the others will manifest similarly…. Thus, Resonance."

The word echoed through Emerys' mind as he watched the peculiar sight of those two, Akihiko Jakusha and Tara Netami, advance upon the Chimera.

"So that's what was causing all that noise? You interrupted my nap, bastard."
