The intense quietude in the dining room was enough to drive me insane. I stared at my plate of spaghetti Bolognese, twirling the red colored strands of food on my fork. The only sound was the labored breathing of my father who sat beside me, not touching his dinner but resorting to glaring at all the boys who sat round the table including Ace and Drake. Ace's eyes were darker than usual and his hair hung tousled over his head, my father's phone rang and he narrowed his eyes at the screen before answering the call.
"Mr. governor" my fork fell with a clatter unto my plate. Id gained the attention of the table but I didn't care. He was talking to the governor of New York.
"yes" my father answered looking at Ace for a moment. his lips paused in a grim line. "well sir, I can't take the blame for this, it was Jose's fault and if he doesn't take care, I'll have no choice but to send him out, have a good day" he hung up and dropped his phone on the table. He stared at all of us. "stay away from him, Ace, it's a last warning" my father picked up his fork and started eat as if nothing happened but as for me, my appetite had flown out of the window.
"why aren't you eating?" Alessandro asked. Everybody stopped eating and stared at me. I sent him a silent middle finger.
"you're not allergic, are you?" Theo added. I stared at them with a blank look. They hadn't seen me eat a few spoons so I could easily lie that I was allergic. I scanned their faces and my eyes landed on Ace. He was staring intently at me and I had a nagging feeling that he saw mw eat but I had no choice.
"um…I'm allergic to something but I'm not sure exactly what It is, thanks anyway" I quickly stood up and fled the dining room for my room. Once I was in, I shut the door and breathed a sigh of relief. I wasn't even sure why I had run away. Then I heard a knock on the door. I flung it open and almost bumped into Alessandro.
"your dad said we should get you something else to eat" he handed me a tray with a bowl of mac and cheese. I smiled and took the tray. He walked away but before I could shut the door, someone put their foot and opened the door. It was Ace. I gulped.
"hey" he murmured slowly.
"hi" I replied. We stared at each other for approximately 10 seconds. "thanks for not ratting me out" I finally said.
He grinned "sorry about the fight" I smiled back. Why was he apologizing.
"no problem, Jose can be an idiot sometimes"
He raised an eyebrow "how would you know?"
"I met him once in the hallway, a total idiot" I replied with a smile but Ace was not smiling.
"got to go, Sof, see you tomorrow" he walked away just like that. Weird. I shut my door and settled down to eat my mac and cheese while doing my homework. Once done, I made my bed and dozed off.
