Chapter 42 - Evolution Isn't for the Faint of Heart

"Envy, envy is something every creature has; whether it's frequent or barely existent. It lays in wait for the perfect opportunity to strike, becoming detrimental if left unchecked."

"Where's the door, I'm holding the darn key; but it's nowhere in sight." Sighed Imogen as she broke her toe on a malicious, blue table.

"God darn it, my toe!"

"Hello!" "I may of given you the wrong key, so as an apology; you can use your time here as a respite and it'll not effect the race." Announced a voice as Imogen screamed words of pain.

"The actual key is on that table in front of you, I'll be sure not to make another mistake; have a good day contestant." Assured the voice while Imogen was sitting on the floor healing her wounded toe.

"I'm going to break every last table in existence even if it costs me dearly, they've put me through too much." Mumbled Imogen as she sliced the table in four.

"Now to check on all that I've gotten, it seems as though I got a Binding Token from the last fight; so I can finally use that Broken Sword Talisman for something." Noted Imogen while taking out the Broken Sword Talisman.

*𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Would you like to use your system Binding Token on the Broken Sword Talisman, or wait until you evolve

"Oh right, I can evolve as well; no point in me wasting the Binding Token then." Reasoned Imogen as she shoved the Broken Sword Talisman back into her pocket. "Well then, can I evolve now?" Inquired Imogen while sitting down on a chair.

*𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: Yes, you can start whenever you'd like; except while in combat

"Let's start then, I hate waiting; it leaves a bad taste in my mouth." Concluded Imogen as she fell asleep instantaneously.

"How original system, you barely changed anything." Suspired Imogen while looking around the pitch black room.

-----------------------------------------

𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐲 𝐓𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐎𝐟 𝐅𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: These ticks thrive in pain, which means that with each hit they receive per battle; they gain +0.3 DEF and STR. When near death, their DEF is doubled while their AGT is halved; making them fight to the bitter end. Sadly they were almost all wiped during The Great Peasant Revolt, where unhappy peasants in The Rural Kingdom denied all forms of flagellation and revolted against the church

𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲(𝐬): STR - High, VIT - Low, AGT - Low, DEF - High, INT - Medium

-----------------------------------------

𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐲 𝐓𝐢𝐜𝐤: The normal evolution for a Fragmented False Tick, they're true enactments of purity; so pure in fact that not one soul could question it. These ticks are completely stripped of emotion, so when they kill another being who's not entirely pure; they gain +0.1 to all stats considered pure by the tick in question. Some even say that the gods have granted them a slight bit of foresight, but it's unknown whether the legend is true or not

𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲(𝐬): All stats considered pure - High, All stats considered impure - Low

𝐖𝐞𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲(𝐬): All weapon types

𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐫 𝐃𝐫𝐲𝐚𝐝'𝐬 𝐓𝐢𝐜𝐤: In olden times dryads were a common sight, people had to be careful which trees they cut down; or they else would face a dryad's wrath. But people weren't the only ones who had to be careful around dryads, ticks were an especially favored delicacy among them, leading the most common tick species; the Lesser Dryad's Ticks to go extinct. When these ticks fight near trees, their stats get buffed by 15%, but when they fight near dryads; their stats get debuffed by 30%

𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲(𝐬): STR - Medium, VIT - Medium, AGT - Medium, DEF - Medium, INT - Medium

𝐖𝐞𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲(𝐬): All, but swords

𝐓𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐎𝐟 𝐏𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐤: Many years ago, a tick was in desperate need for a place to lay her eggs; but all she could find was an old decrepit tree. She climbed the tree even with the vines stabbing her every step she took, but when she made it to the top; she couldn't bear the pain any longer and died in a pool of her own blood. When morning came, a new species of tick had arisen from her dead carcass, one imbued with the power of all her sufferances; these were the Ticks Of Penitent Bark. They grant any item they touch the powers of age long pains, causing the item to inflict bleeding damage with each successful hit. Every time they take damage, the bonds of blood strike back; returning half the damage they take back to the attacker

𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲(𝐬): STR - High, VIT - Medium, AGT - Low, DEF - Medium, INT - High

𝐖𝐞𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲(𝐬): Anything it can touch

𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡 𝐓𝐢𝐜𝐤: Once, a star fell to Nodgein; it was made out of the strangest of materials. Attracting a lot of attention. People from all over came to see this mysterious stone, all with different motives. Some wanted the stone to grant them powers, others wanted it to grant their wishes, but no matter what human or demi human touched it; nothing happened. People were outraged, kingdoms turned on one another and the stone was dumped into a forest to rot. But years after the wars had begun, one man stumbled upon the stone and saw the effects it had on the environment. It turned regular creatures into what he liked to call, Seraphs and from that stone Seraph Ticks were born. These ticks have an extraordinary amount of mana compared to a regular tick, but their bodies are brittle and don't take much to crack. Every spell they cast reduces the next spell's cost by 2%, leading some people to underestimate them; causing their death

𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲(𝐬): STR - Medium, VIT - Low, AGT - High, DEF - Low, INT - High

𝐖𝐞𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲(𝐬): Anything that can harness the power of magic

𝐕𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐓𝐢𝐜𝐤: Vines hang low in the jungles of The Rural Kingdom, if you're not careful they could be your end; ticks learned this far too early. In times long past, ticks would climb on these vines hoping for salvation; but they would only be met with a gruesome end. Millions of ticks would fall prey to the vines year after year, but slowly after so much death; they evolved to walk on the vines without trouble. Things were peaceful among the jungle dwelling ticks for quite some time, until the vines slowly rotted away without the masses of ticks to sustain them. Some of the more intelligent species of the jungles soon noticed that their only means of defence was dying, so they experimented on the ticks; they tried to reverse evolution itself. But not all went as planned, somehow they had managed to mix a vine with a tick; this led to the creation of Vine Blood Ticks. These Ticks seem like defence's incarnation, everything about them is centered on defence. If you touch them you'll get poisoned, if you hurt them you'll burned by acid; if you kill them your stats will halved for a week

𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲(𝐬): STR - Low, Vit - High, AGT - Low, Defence - High, INT - Medium

𝐓𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐎𝐟 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Thunder and lightning is a rarity on Nodgein, but in the unlikely case of a thunderstorm; creatures can get struck by lightning. This has made people believe that it's a sign from the gods and whomever these Creatures Of Divine Retribution kill are rightfully ended. In the higher sanctums of The Hallowed Martyry these beasts are required for entry as it's thought that they will never side with evil. These ticks are just one of the many possible Creatures Of Divine Retribution, although they're just as powerful. Once a day these creatures can call down the lightning of the heavens to strike an opponent, causing almost fatal damage to the targeted creature. These creatures can even peer through evil at any moment and see the truth in every action, you cannot lie around these creatures; or they'll cut you to shreds.

𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭 𝐀𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲(𝐬): STR - Medium, VIT - Low, AGT - High, DEF - Low, INT - High

𝐖𝐞𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲(𝐬): Weapons infused with lightning

"This is too much, almost all the choices are good; I'm going to be sitting here for hours!" Exclaimed Imogen as she took another look through all the choices.

"Well, actually I've a few to cross out, I don't like the Tick Of Divine Retribution, the Pure Prophecy Tick; or the Holy Tick Of Flagellance." Ascertained Imogen while glancing at them one last time.

"The Holy Tick Of Flagellance might of worked, but I don't like whips in the slightest." Mused Imogen as she looked at her last four options.

"And now that I look at it again, I'd also have to get rid of the Vine Blood Tick; using just my bare hands doesn't work well for me." Frowned Imogen as she looked around for anything she might be missing.

"As fun as the Seraph Tick would be, I'm already going in a different direction; so that's off the list." Grumbled Imogen while staring deep into the last two choices.

"The Lesser Dryad's Tick is more of a jack of all trades type, of which is what I want; but the debuffs are awful." Scowled Imogen as she looked over at the only other option.

"The Tick Of Penitent Bark sounds interesting, but I don't like the sound of being one of those; it makes me feel weird." Muttered Imogen while feeling as though her mind was made up.

"I'll have to go with... the Tick Of Penitent Bark, it seems more reliable than the Lesser Dryad's Tick and the only problem is an unfounded fear." Concluded Imogen as she selected The Tick Of Penitent Bark.

*𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐭 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐝: Commencing Evolution Immediately

"Land, never have I been so glad to see you; nothing will be able to make me leave you again!" Coughed Clarence while climbing onto the wet, sandy shore.

"Curse the maker of this ocean, it was created to kill people; who the fuck does that! Hollered Clarence as he used his sword to vault himself up.

"Time to get you some food little guy and maybe I'll name you while I'm at it." Smiled Clarence while shaking all the muddy sand off himself.

"I hate sand, it never comes off and feels so cumbersome; but it's what I'll have to put up with for now." Acknowledged Clarence as he looked around for some easy food.

"Where even am I, this looks nothing like The Rural Kingdom; I can't find a single morsel of food." Complained Clarence while watching two creatures battle on a boat far out.

"But the bigger question is how I'll get back, this looks like an island to me and I'm not crossing the sea again." Despaired Clarence as he narrowly avoided a magically appearing table.

"Sorry!" "I was busy with another contestant, because of how late I was; you can go to the third dimension already." Apologised a voice while Clarence was pulling his friend off his finger.

"It's fine, but can I have some food; my friend here's starving." Asked Clarence as he held out his friend.

"Sure, I'll do it immediately; well that is if your friend here isn't dying from being out of water." Concurred the voice while watching Clarence start panicking.

"I'm just joking, your friend doesn't need to breathe; I'll be back with your food soon!" Admitted the voice as it teleported away to find food.

"Oh thank Denair, I was getting worried there; I thought that I had killed you." Ruminated Clarence while looking at his friend with relief.

"Hopefully you can wait a bit longer... Eiden, I think I'll call you that." Decreed Clarence as he looked at a bunch of food that had just appeared on the table.

"That's as good as you're going to get, for I'm needed elsewhere; goodbye!" Hollered the voice while vanishing into thin air.

"Well there he goes, too bad; it was nice to talk to someone even for a short moment." Lamented Clarence as he tossed Eiden onto the table.

"Eat all you want Eiden, I'm not judging you; although you are looking a little chubby around the edges." Teased Clarence while watching Eiden devour food until the sun set and night claimed the sky.
