'Finally! Thank god for alarms, if not for it I wouldn't have been able to get here in time' I told myself as I step down the Jeepney and waited for it to leave before stepping on the pedestal lane and started walking towards a white and brown building. There are 6 rooms on each floor, all with green doors and steel barred windows. There are also stairs on the left, right, and middle of the building and lots of fire extinguishers, and if I say a lot, I mean one extinguisher in each classroom, one in each corridor, and one in each stair. I don't know who designed this but that person must have really liked safety a lot.
There are different buildings for each level of education; tertiary, secondary, and primary. There are also different buildings for the college of; Arts & Architecture, Maritime, Engineering, and Information Technology. There aren't many students walking outside since we have a flag ceremony every Monday morning and only security guards are allowed outside class time. Once I reached the building, I look around to see if anyone is also late, but to my dismay, I only saw one student speedily typing on her phone, she seemed pretty worried, with her brows scrunched, eyes wide, mouth gaped, and...I'm losing adjectives. 'Whatever, not my problem anyway' I moved past her classroom and took the stairs.
As soon as I reached the fifth floor, my knees were a bit strained from all the walking. I hurriedly walked towards my classroom and opened the door with the sign 'S-04', there was only one person inside.
"Rey!" I called her out to get her attention.
She looked up from her phone and asked "Hey, how's your weekend?"
"You know, same old, same old" When I say that she thinks of reading, watching, cleaning, and helping out the business. And when I say that I think of all that above but with a sprinkle of hopelessness and a topping of jealousy. And she is the latter.
Rey has always been pretty, guys like her to the point of pursuit. But sometimes with her personality, I don't think an ordinary guy would suit her. She's spontaneous, cunning, spits back if need be. She has this guise of a fairy but a disposition of a gangster. She'll sit like one with her legs spread out and even shamelessly open her skirt wide to fan her sweaty legs from the blazing heat. Well, it's not like I can fault her, it is hot when it's summer in our country. Even worse since we only have two seasons; wet and dry.
"Let me guess you got here early but didn't bother to go to the gymnasium." I looked at her with my left brow raised and with my right side's lips upward.
"Spot on, my friend. What's the point of having speakers installed in each classroom when we can sing our national anthem right here?" She does have a point.
"It's called tradition, can't fault everyone and you for being lazy," I told her smilingly.
"Hey!" She looked at me, annoyed.
I laughed at her for easily getting riled up. Rey's smart but she gets lazy a lot. She wouldn't even do her assignment unless it's due in a few minutes. I don't think I can do that since I'm not as fast as her in coming up with answers.
"What are you even looking at your phone for this early?" I asked since she likes pacing around more than busying herself around it. But sometimes she watches a lot of funny videos on Facebook even if the teachers in front of the classroom.
"Oh yes, I almost forgot about it. There was this...actually I'll just show it to you". Her eyes perked up. She took her phone from her desk and showed me the video.
It was a busy street with cars passing by. The camera was concentrated on a person lying on the side of the street, with his body spasming and foam coming out of his mouth. Then his body suddenly stopped, the girl that has been on his side placed her fingers on his neck to check for a pulse and then put her ear near his mouth to see if he was breathing. Then I saw as his eyes quickly opened up and in the next second, he bit the girl's ear and pulled it out of her. I can hear screaming from everyone in the video, especially the loud 'Oh, shit! F***', that must have been from the person holding the camera. Some people started walking away but not exactly running, there was fear but curiosity won. The once-seizing guy pounced on the fallen girl and started pulling out skins from her flesh with blood pooling around her as she screamed for help. That's when people started running away but another person with a baseball bat in his hand tried to help the girl. Another shocking thing happened, as he swung the bat on the guy, the girl suddenly sprang with energy even with those injuries and bit him.
'Zombie' the one word that I came up with. Zombies are fiction, an imaginary monster from one of the greatest minds in literature. It's supposed to be impossible but the video doesn't lie, what if it's made up? We all know how advanced technology is. I wouldn't be surprised if that was made by a group of college students. I fear for what might happen if that is real but I have this desire in my heart for fiction to come to life.
The video was shaky as the cameraman was running away, we can only see his feet touching the gravel on each foot. Suddenly, the camera fell and tumbled. It stopped rolling and then it showed us a view of a guy who clearly tripped. He was rising from his position but it was too late, the baseball guy caught up with him. The screams pierced our ears, and though it was far from our school, the fear seemed to seep out of the phone and spread out into our surroundings. Rey looked away but I stared as if I was hypnotized. It was disgusting to see cannibalism. I love Hannibal Lecter but that is nasty. Then the baseball guy followed the screams and left the cameraman but then he too stood up, with black liquid coming out of his mouth, his eyes all black with no sclera to be seen, and black veins all over his body. He runs and crashes the camera, then it stops.
"Oh god, what was that? Is it even real?" Rey scared out her wit was clearly shocked.
"I don't know but it may be just for a movie," I said to reassure her.
"Yeah, you're right. It's not as if zombies are real" She waved her hand in front of her as if to swat an insignificant fly away from her.
There was nothing else for me to say for I too was scared but I'm curious to see if it was truly fake or real. Silence pervaded us.
"What's taking them so long? They should have been here 3 minutes ago." Rey looks worriedly at her phone.
She's right. Where is everybody?
