"You're right, Marizel," I said gently. "It was unfair. Gregory should have known peace long ago. All I can tell you is that he's at rest now. The system needs to change. That's why I'm in training as a psychopomp. Samael knows what it's like now to have a human he cares about, and through me he's realized how flawed Heaven's approach to reaping is. There are no mediators between death and life like societies used to have. Shamans, for the most part, are gone, and the psychopomp work humans used to do has withered, leaving the world rife with lost souls. I'm the pilot program- Samael's lab rat, if you will. If my training proves successful, we'll start training humans throughout the world in psychopomp work. Soon, the world may be filled with people capable of putting souls like Gregory to rest."
Marizel looked past me towards Samael. "Is this true?"
