Chapter 1 - The Smell of Rain (Lie-1, Part-1)

A beautiful yellow covered everything, the sun's rays were trying to pass through the window. Birds chirping and flying above the window clearly saying, "How long are you gonna be in bed? It's already this late."

I looked around the room. My bed was placed right under a huge glass window covering a part of the roof along with half of the wall. Unlike this sunny day, the last day was quite gloomy. It started raining at 5 in the afternoon and continued till late at night. It was quite the scenery. It's so dreamy to hear the raindrops lying on the bed. The weather was so good that I finished two detective series books I was reading.

The weather was not bad at all. I jumped down from the bed. If I hurry, I might see the rainbow. I ran out the door without even brushing my teeth. The path leads straight to a lake on the right of the house. I stood there, searching for a rainbow.

"Wow..." I exclaimed. Fortunately, a half rainbow was still visible in the southern sky. I might have stood there for a long time, as I heard a deep voice calling my name.

"Honey, let's head inside. I made breakfast," a remarkable affection expressed in every word, the voice made my heart flatter.

I turned back. Surely, he is my husband.

I ran toward him, grabbed his hand, and dragged him all the way to show the rainbow. Smiling, he followed me.

"Beautiful, isn't it?" I asked, eyes set on the sky.

"Surely," he smiled and then leaned forward to kiss my cheek.

The sudden gesture surprised me. I blushed. Looking at me, he laughed again.

"Let's go. Your parents are visiting today," he kinda dragged me inside. The sight of his wide back made me feel safe.

A question lingered in my mind. 'How long have I been this happy? Well, it doesn't matter. what matter is I am happy.'

I entered the bath. A huge bathtub was placed in a corner, filled with hot water. As always, he prepared the bath for me. So, it only made sense to take a relaxing bath. I soaked in the water, and couldn't help but think how blessed I am. Sure, my husband is busy, but he gives me his ultimate attention to the point I often feel all of these are nothing but a dream.

I stared at the ceiling and murmured, "A weekend like this is cozy, making me want to live here forever."

"Thump"

I stood violently when I realized what I was thinking. I shouted to myself, "Don't talk like crazy. This is real. After all, we found each other, we live happily, and will continue to do so."

I realized I was feeling dizzy from staying in the tub for so long. So, I stepped out of the bath and changed my bathrobe to an olive green gown.

An aroma spread up. I hurried up knowing my dear husband made a delicious breakfast yet again. I dare not be late.

Seeing my hurried steps, the man smiled, a smile so warm. I felt my heart clench.

"Did you call them?" He asked while he handed me a plate. I picked up a toast and an egg.

"Yes. They just got on the road," I munched on the toast as I mumbled.

"Then 12 it is." He blocked my hand that tried to reach the Nutella jar. Instead, he placed three pieces of kiwi. I humped in response. As always, so damn health-conscious.

"I'll help you in the kitchen," he suggested.

"There's a lot to do. I think we should clean first. Then let's go to the supermarket, we need some groceries."

"Mn," the other person agreed.

We ate in silence for a while. He finished before me, yet waited for me to finish. After I finished, he collected the plates and headed to the kitchen. I followed him.

We worked together in the kitchen and arranged the dining, and hall room. We then made a shopping list. It took us almost one and a half hours to finish all the work.

My parents arrived at noon, as he predicted. Even my brother came with them.

"Oh, Ella," Mom came out of the car and hugged me.

"Hello, sis," Evan said with a smile, two shopping bags in his hands. I went ahead to take it from him.

And then Dad came out of the car with even more bags. I couldn't help but explain, " What did you bring so much?"

"A few presents for my little girl and her prince, and... for the cutie yet to come to this world," Dad gave us a big smile.

My husband got there and took the bags from him. Dad simply embraced him. The two men exchanged a few words.

I couldn't help but think how happy this occasion is!

"Sis, we are going to have a barbeque, right?" Evan asked excitedly.

"Yes," I nodded. "Are you here only for the barbeque, Evan?"

"No, of course. I will get to see the stars as well." He gave me a teasing smirk.

I slapped his arm. "How mean! Will it cost you money to say you are here to see me?"

He laughed and struck back.

"Ow," I didn't stop as well.

"Evan, Ella, stop being childish," Mom exclaimed. It seemed she felt quite embarrassed. She came closer and scolded us, "Even, behave yourself. Your brother-in-law is here. Ella too. Aren't you going to be a mother?"

"It's okay, Mother. It's so refreshing to watch them fight," my husband laughed.

"You spoiled these two too much, son." Mom shook her head.

"Mnnn... So delicious," Dad exclaimed as he ate. "Did you cook all these, son?"

"Dad," I said. "I am the one who cooked today."

"Son, you did a good job teaching her," Mom praised my husband.

"Mom, you too," I couldn't help but exclaim at their favoritism.

"Ha ha ha," Dad burst into laughter, "Just teasing you sweetie."

In the evening, we drove to the nearby mountain. The mountain is maintained regularly. Thus, it became a popular picnic spot. On nights like this, the mountain fills up with so many people as the sky gets clear and if fortunate, there could also be a meteor shower.

Fortunately, there were not many people on this day. We found a good place to sit on. Maybe because we went there at 4 o'clock.

Dad and my husband were unloading the mini truck when Evan and I set out the barbeque stand. Mom arranged the folding chairs and table. When we finished, it was still daytime. So, we decided to play some games.

We started with a pillow passing game. We thought it was not gonna work at first as we were few people. However, it turned out well. And Mom was the one to win.

We thought of chatting for a while when Evan pulled a monopoly board out of nowhere. Dad cheered seeing this. My husband went out running to Evan. I couldn't help but laugh.

When I think about it, like other families, we had times when we fought, we were in dismay. Before my marriage, my Mom and Dad used to work a lot to make a living. Even though, it was barely enough to go on and pay off the huge debt we had. That's why I did not go to college and started working right after graduation.

Mom always whined about how I could go to a good university with my grade. But I knew, instead of studying, paying off the debt as soon as possible was important. And it worked. After two years, we paid off the last penny of the debt.

Well, another good thing that happened was meeting him. He was my boss, good-looking, rich, and from a good family. I didn't think of much. Never in my dream, I thought of marrying him. I mean we barely talked and he seemed out of my reach.

I didn't think one day he would kneel in front of me asking for my hand. The thought made me smile.

"Let's choose a name for the baby," Dad's sudden shout brought me out of my dreamland.

"Yey, I've already written them in these," Evan pulled out a few small papers.

"That's five of them!" I gasped.

At that time Dad pulled out his stack as well which is obviously a stack in a literal sense.

"Dad, seriously?" I couldn't help shouting. "How many are there?"

"Well... not much, only seventeen," Dad said while scratching his neck. "Well, every one of them is pretty."

"Oh, dear," Mom gasped this time. I followed her gaze. It was my husband.

"What the-? You too?" I said, feeling helpless. "There are more pieces than Dad's?"

"Only twenty-two," My husband said with a lowered head.

"Mom, how about you?" I asked, anticipating another unbearable sight.

"Only three, dear. I know how you would feel," she answered.

"Thanks," I said, pulling out two papers. "I choose these two."

I looked at the men. "We will do a lottery. But every person will submit at most three suggestions."

I continued after a pause, "Cause we will have only one baby."

Everyone nodded.

"Then let me decide which ones to choose," My husband suggested.

"Ok," I nodded. "Dad, you too."

Therefore, the men entered their world of evaluating. I and Mom finally leaned on chairs, admiring the twilight.

"Mom, how long happiness continues?" I said, not averting my eyes from the horizon.

"Well... as long as you want you to continue." Mom reached for me, "Sweetie, don't dwell over such things. I know you can't help these thoughts in your pregnancy, but you need to try not to have depressing thoughts."

"These are not depressing thoughts though," I murmured.

"You said something?" Mom asked, didn't hear what I said.

"Nothing. Let's go, they chose their selected names," I got up from my chair and moved it forward.

After a few times, the raffle draw ended. The chosen name was Eve if it's a girl and Ethan if it's a boy.

"Isn't it a bit plain, Evan?" I asked, a bit disappointed.

"Better than Athena," Evan teased Dad.

"Better than Fairy," Dad looked at my husband.

"All of you are so childish," I shook my head.

"It's already evening. Let's prepare the meat," Mom stood up, stretching her limbs.

"Yeah, let's go."

A whole lot of stars appeared on that moonless night. We planned to rest a bit after we ate. I lay down on the mat, staring at the stars. Traces of thought appeared in my head.

'Million of light years apart, there may be a girl just like me. She must have a life. A life so beautiful. She is my parallel self after all...'

My eyes felt heavy as I fell into a deep slumber.

"..Ella...

Ms. Ella?

Ms. Ella"

I came to when a female voice repeatedly called my name. I looked around, everything was so white.
