Hope and Ayala snuggled close on a blanket in front of the fireplace for warmth. The shadows and light swirled on the concerned faces as logs and dried vines crackled into the hearth. Their knowledge of the outside world came from Drake's and Terix's writings, as well as Hope's observations through the eyes of animals.
Ayala curled her lip at her friend's untidy hair and brushed aside the stray whisps. "Hope, when are you going to take care of your hair? I know you put me to promise I won't braid your hair ever again. But that was last week. Have you changed your mind?"
"No. I stand by what I said before. Besides, who can see me here except you?" Hope smiled before turning her gaze upon the flames.
The queen was not going to let this go so lightly. "Perhaps Drake will show up unnoticed. Do you not want to be prepared for him?"
