Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

Flashes of light tore apart the ebony black sky. Dividing it into two every time it gave evidence of its existence. Thunder crackled, startling every heart in its wake. It wasn't long before the sky would begin to cry. The premonition of rain had come true. After so many years of draught, ember eyes looked the heavens above and saw that the gods were right. Soon enough, it began raining, heavier than it had ever before. More violently, than ever before.

The blonde haired girl felt a tug at her skirt causing her to look down at bright blue eyes staring into her own. The saliva dripping across the babe's chin made the girl want to laugh. The creature tugged at the silk again, silently asking what was going on. The girl was conflicted on what to do next. Should she listen to her heart? Or should she listen to everyone around her, including the spongy mass in her skull that had a soul and voice of it's own?

The blue eyed creature watched her closely, with a finger perched at the source of the saliva that was now dribbling out of control, at the tall being and how her ember eyes frantically moved around the room.

The only things that her eyes saw were the little baby and the cloth bag she dared to call a suitcase in a corner at the far end of the room. Deciding to finally take action, she picked the baby up and set it down in its cot by the window. When she made sure that the window was fastened and would not open with the wind, she made her way out of the room. She heard the baby shriek for her, but choosing to ignore it, she strode down the dark corridor with a purpose. She would have to settle this matter tonight, whether she liked it or not.

Coming to stop in front of a huge wooden door, she lifted her hand up to knock but brought it back down. She tried again, with the same result. For the umpteenth time, she lifted her hand, when she heard a shuffling sound to her right. She looked to see a guard standing and staring at her with wide eyes.

"What?" She snapped. The guard rapidly shook his head with wide eyes, as though not expecting her to call him out. He quickly scurried away from his spot.

With a heavy sigh, she knocked. This time, she physically performed the act instead of imagining it.

"Come in," a deep voice called out from inside the room.

With shaking hands, she opened the door and stepped inside. She lifted her gaze to see the cloaked figure sitting on a wing chair by the window. It seemed to be staring at the chaotic sky. "The time has come," the figure whispered. "It is your choice now, to accept or forsake it."

"I am conflicted, oh wise one." She said, as she lowered to her knees. The wooden floor imparting it's cold to her body. "If I do this, there is no going back."

"The future...it is unclear until you make your choice, little one."

"Please, tell me what to do." She pleaded.

"I cannot." The stoic voice replied.

"Will the gods wrath be upon me if I do?" Her voice cracking as she finished her sentence.

"It will be upon you either way. Now, leave. Make your decision, but tell no one."

She nodded, gratefully, and made her way to the door only to be stopped in her tracks by what the cloaked figure said next, "Just remember, a time will come when you will have to face the inevitable. May the universe be in your favour when you do."

The blonde beauty felt a lump grow in her throat as fear threatened to cripple her, her heart pounded as she raced back to her room, but as she opened the door and saw the blue eyed infant, with hands on the rails of the crib, she knew what she had to do. She knew then, that there was no other way.

Picking up the suitcase, she turned to the baby and whispered, "Come along now, little one, it's time." The baby babbled in it's own language not comprehending what was happening as she tied a cloak around its tiny body. Mustering up all the courage she could, she rushed through the corridor to the little kitchen in the back. Looking around, she saw no sign of activity, and why would there be at almost three in the morning? Thanking her lucky stars, she rushed through the back door, and sprinted into the fields as though her life depended on it. She knew she would be sought, but for now, all she had to do was run as fast as she could, and hoped that no one would come looking.
