Pierce Vane and his men gathered their weapons and rushed through the tunnel. He left some behind to guard the cavern, but his best and most brutal men went with him.
They didn't speak, but the sounds of their footsteps echoed through the tunnel, and the smell of smoke from their torches filled the cool, damp air. Every wall danced with shadows and the flickering light of the fires. Any little creatures and insects living in this passage ran for cover.
Vane wasn't a fool, so he didn't lead the group. He sent a few of his biggest men ahead of him in case they came upon anyone waiting to ambush them. They would fight or die, and he would be able to gather himself enough to fight or get away.
But who was it they would be facing?
