Mason reached his hands out on either side of him and used them to keep him from slipping on the steep decline. He tried to dig his heels in to help but the stone floor of the gave was unyielding. As hard as he tried to slow himself, he still ended up falling more than climbing down.
Jamie was right behind him and despite carrying the branch for their light, he still seemed to have an easier time with the climb than Mason. However, they were both still moving quite a bit faster than they would like.
The air was cool and damp but as they moved farther down, Mason felt it begin to get dryer. He also noticed fairly quickly that it was beginning to get lighter as well. He knew there had to be light coming from somewhere ahead and the knowledge made his nerves go on edge.
