Mason stood in the dimly lit tunnel staring at Ilona, his expression a mix of surprise and confusion. His lips parted, but it was a moment before he could manage to make any words come out.
"I... I don't understand..."
"I'm not pregnant," she repeated with a smile, "We've been so worried, but now we don't have to be anymore. We can make sure we never have to be again."
Mason blinked as his mind began to slowly catch up with reality. His gaze dropped to her slim waist and then back to her face as he processed this. From deep in the tunnel came the echoes of a steady dripping of water. The quick rhythm seemed to almost blend with the feeling of his heart beating swiftly in his chest.
"You're not pregnant," he said at last.
"I am not," Ilona agreed with a giggle of happiness before biting her lip, "It's good news, Mace... isn't it?"
