Ilona felt uneasy with her mother's sudden subject change. All anyone had talked about for days was the next dragon and the next attack. To talk about something else seemed strange.
However, the crackling of the fire could have been the tension crackling between them. Ilona didn't know what to say to her mother's words, and so she said nothing.
When Ilona didn't reply, Anja continued.
"I know you love Mason… but I hope you see that it would be very dangerous for you to have a child here on this island… from the pregnancy, the birth, and then just having a baby here at all... it's all dangerous here."
"Everything is dangerous here, mother," Ilona muttered, not meeting the woman's eye as she bit at one of her nails.
