Ilona's words splashed over Mason like ice water, and his body went very still. His breaths came quick next to her ear, his heartbeat now even faster than it had been before. Beneath him, Ilona's body went limp, her words clearly having a sobering effect on her too.
"What... What did you say?" he barely breathed.
"I, um... I think I... I think I might be pregnant."
Again, the ice water splashed him. Mason had to think through each word, trying to put the sentence together in his head so he could understand it, but he couldn't.
"M-Mace?" she whispered, her voice trembling with her fear.
He blinked, unable to move. Unable to think. What had she said? Her words didn't make sense.
"Mason?" he could hear her worrying growing, "Please... Please say something."
