Hearing Nick's words, Mason leaned back again, turning to stare hard at the ceiling.
"Are you alright?" Ilona asked nervously.
"I'm alright... For a moment, I just forgot about... about the losses..."
Ilona felt her heart sink, and she reached out to gently take his face in her hands, turning it until his sad blue eyes met hers.
"You told me from the beginning that there would be losses. You couldn't help that. The important thing is that you saved so many more than you lost."
Mason breathed in slowly but finally nodded.
"Alright, we're ready to fix his shoulder," Anja said then, coming back with Jamie.
Ilona stood back and watched as her mother and brother helped Mason sit up. He winced and inhaled sharply with each movement, his body in pain. She could see his shoulder was very swollen now, and he mumbled to Anja that his arm was hurting very badly.
