The next day, the weather stayed chilly and damp, signaling a change in the seasons. It was a jungle island, so it would never get too cold, but it was enough that Mason and Ilona knew they needed to fix the chimney for their cave.
Mason climbed up to the top of the ridge and found the crack that Ilona had first discovered in the cave ceiling. He used the tools he had retrieved from the ship and picked a spot in the fissure to widen into a hole.
The pair found a tall, thin tree and cut it into sections before using the tools and a fire to hollow them out, making them into their own kind of pipes. Then, Mason stuck the pipes down through the crack and into the cave, making their chimney.
The project had taken them an entire day, but that night when they built a fire and their home was warm, they were happy.
