Chapter 7 - Coming Clean

Many hours later, Ruby is the only one awake in the house, still watching movies on the newly hooked up TV. Stavil fell asleep on the couch, and Alth went up to his room to sleep shortly after Thanian. She hears Tayer's ship coming down, and she normally would be all for confronting him right now, she's far too tired, and wanted to do it with Alth and Thanian anyways. The ship lands behind the school, and a few moments pass before Tayer and a distraught looking Wally come in.

"Hey. Stavil left some gift for you on the counter, Wally. He said to 'handle with care'.". Wally sees a long wrapped gift with a note saying, "Be careful with it and read the instructions on how to use it, this'll be useful for next time you want to fight Morte.". "Great, I'll tell him thanks whenever he gets up." Wally lazily says.

Ruby decides to question Wally, and wants to see if he'll be lying to her. She opens her mouth to speak, but is cut off by Wally, who says "I need to talk to you, Ruby. I've been lying to you."

Ruby is shocked, but she plays dumb at first. She says, "Oh, um...about what?" Wally takes a deep inhale, then exhales to prepare himself. "I didn't adopt these kids solely so I could be a teacher. I adopted them to raise them into soldiers to help me fight and kill Oppac of the Quarter-Star Mafia, and Morte. Shortly before they arrived here, I had their memory altered to where they remember nothing of their previous lives, and they only keep their personality traits. Today, and on the opening of the school, I was out hunting Morte on my own, knowing that I could easily be killed by him. I've been abusing the kind nature of Tayer, knowing that he'd take me anywhere. I've lied to you and Thanian about why you work here. You're not here just to 'guard the school'. I mean, you are, but there's more to it. I fully expect assassins or soldiers from Morte's faction or the Quarter-Star Mafia to come here and try and kill us, that's why I hired you, because you're strong and a skilled fighter. For god's sake you have 38 trophies for fighting from around the galaxy. I hired Thanian because he knows so much about Alpha Humans, and can prepare them for activating their powers. I had the school built here because it's close to a high concentrated area of Quarter-Star members. The Consigliere of the entire gang lives two miles from us. Stavil has highly classified business in the Vrocilia faction, but his work relates to the Quarter-Star, and he's partnered with me in this. Jassu is a spy, thief, and conman. He's amazing at getting information on where anyone will be. There. That's mostly everything." Wally strongly sighs, and falls back onto the couch next to Ruby.

She's shocked that Wally actually said everything to her, before having to question him about it. Her pent up anger subsides, and takes the time to notice how Wally looks defeated. His spirit shattered, and the determination for his plan was postponed. "What happened while you were out today?" Ruby asks with a concerned tone. "Morte pretty much said that if I try to stop him, he'll kill us all. Including the kids. And he knows things about me. Like, it's scary what he knows. Things I've never told anyone." Tayer joins in on the conversation, saying "Even worse, he knows where we are. He can show up whenever he wants. I'll definitely have a good time getting over that looming thought." "Thanks for telling me, I know that you usually feel like you can do all these things on your own, but things like this don't get done easily. And yes. Raising the kids to be little soldiers is messed up, but if you can put Morte past you, and raise these kids like a father, I promise you everything will turn out for the best. Let go of your pride, think straight, and do what's best for everyone." Wally just looks down then says "It's easier said than done, but I'll try. No, I'll do it. I'll stop going after Morte on my own, for real this time. And tell Jassu to not come here and tell me information on Morte anymore. I'm done dealing with that. For you guys, and the kids.".

"Thank you, Wally. And I hate to ask for even more answers, but you said 'mostly' everything.. what else am I missing?". "Oh, just some extra stuff about me, and some stuff about the students. Well, actually only one of them. And it's not even a big deal, it's just cool and would be neat to reveal when he's older. But, the stuff about me is stuff I don't really wanna say, not just yet at least." Wally explains. "You know, it's fine. You told me some heavy stuff so I don't think I want to know any more. I'm going to bed now, thank you Wally for coming clean."

The same night, Morte travels to Alled, the planet that Biran works on, after his business is done on Boarkeye. His ship casts a dark shadow above Biran and his crew. "Calvon, stand up straight! We want Morte to arrive happy and leave happy." Biran says to a mentally shattered and abused Calvon. This isn't the same cheerful Calvon we saw a month ago. Scarred hands and arms, and a black eye on his left eye instead of his right this time. Calvon stays silent instead of the usual one-liner comment he'd make. Morte's rectangular pod shoots down from his ship, and lands at the end of the dock yet again. He ominously walks out, and towards the workers. "H-hello sir, how are you today?" Biran nervously asks. "..Fine? Show me your progress on the production." Morte says. "O-of course sir." Biran leads Calvon, Retsej, Shizaku, and Morte towards the large industrial building. Biran taps a few keys on the large doors, and after the keypad scans his face, the doors start to open up, revealing a unbelievably large assembly line of new models of the previous prototypes we saw.

When they walk into the factory, a few feet inwards they're stopped by a railing, and on the left and right there are horizontal elevators that take people wherever they want in the factory. Beyond the railing, there's 40 straight rows of an assembly line, where hundreds of robot soldiers are being created. "Magnificent, isn't it?" Biran says to Morte. "Yes. Well done to you. Now that you have this under control, an army needs variation. I have a few ideas of two new models." Morte replies. Biran and his crew have an unsure look on their faces, they didn't expect another large scale request immediately after completing this one. They were barely able to make this happen in a month, who knows when Morte's next deadline is? They all, especially Calvon, had to work ungodly hours to get this done. "Since these two new designs are far larger in scale and more product consuming, I'll give you two whole years to get these new ones done. I want a large tank type machine that has mechanical legs attached to the bottom, so it can angle itself in any direction, move at higher speeds, and can lift up and down. For the second one.."Morte silently thinks to himself for a few seconds, then looks as if he remembers something specific. He adds in, "A 60 foot goliath like robot, different from the rest. It's stronger, has missiles... and can even handle a Nephlim." Biran asks, "A... what?" "A Giant is what some people call them I guess." Morte answers. Biran gets a shocked look on his face and adds in "No disrespect sir, but don't Giants... or Nephlims usually get up to about a hundred feet? Not 60?" Morte replies with "Yes, but making them half the size would be quicker, and easier to make them more powerful and efficient." "Well of course sir, we'll make sure to get them to the best of your liking!" Biran says.

"You've done good. I'll come by every now and then to check in. Just keep working." Morte says, as he leaves the factory, and starts walking towards his pod. He gets halfway to the end of the dock before Calvon clenches his fists, and decides to stand up for himself. He yells "Morte!" The other workers are horrified, this meeting went well, and they didn't want anything to ruin that. Morte stops walking, and turns his head, not amused by Calvon's sudden urge of courage. "What." Morte says in a stern, threatening voice. Calvon's boost in courage begins to quickly fade away the longer he thinks about what kind of situation he just put himself in. His voice trembles as he says "W-where are my kids. I deserve to leave here and see them. I deserve to see Leah as well. Please." Morte plans on ignoring this request, and decides he wants to give mercy to the man. Until Calvon adds in "Or..or I swear to god I'll escape here, and report you, and everyone here, and make sure you're locked up!" Morte turns around, and looks this threat in the face.

He walks right up to Calvon, and visually shows the odds that Calvon is attempting to fight against. Morte is towering over him, and makes Calvon feel weak by just standing there. Morte raises his right arm, but instead of striking Calvon, he firmly grabs his shoulder. He leans his head in towards Calvon, and says into his ear "Calvon, I know where your two boys are. They're in a school for orphans to be trained in combat. But don't you worry, nothing will happen to them. I have a very watchful eye on that place." As he finishes his sentence, his arm that's grabbing Calvon's shoulder has an aura surrounding it, a mainly white color with blue and pink light reflecting off of it. Just from the aura alone, it leaves a strong burning sensation on Calvon's shoulder, forcing him to yelp out in pain as he backs up into the other workers, trying to pat off the heat off his shoulder. "Now I'll be going." Morte then continues his walk back to his pod. He gets in, and shoots up back into his large ship. "Why!? Why would you do that!? What are you thinking!? This meeting was fine, almost all the way through, but you HAD to say something!" Biran yells at Calvon. "You know.. I don't even know why you're yelling at me. Doesn't matter what I say. You're not letting me leave, Morte isn't, there's no point in even trying to argue." Calvon says with a defeated look on his face. His children's lives were just threatened, and there's not a single thing he could have done against it. "Damn right you aren't leaving! You're working here all hours of the day until Morte himself gives you a break! And I couldn't even get a chance to ask Morte for some extra protection for the factory! I've been hearing these stories about pirates on this planet, and I don't want to deal with that!" Biran says. Calvon doesn't care. His life has crumbled around him, and he can't put it back together. The most he can do to see his children is to look into the stars, and just hope for a chance of freedom.
