I dipped my fingers in the water that had pooled up in the pawprint of the large Polar Bear I was tracking. The instructors had sent the other kids which picked bears to different places such as Denmark and Finland while they took me to the northernmost point of Greenland and dropped me off. The instructors had told us that we were to track and kill the bear on our own then make our way back on our our own as well. I currently had been tracking this year for two weeks now, the only tools I had available to me was a dane axe and a seax to kill this beast. I crept through the snow staying low to the ground as I heard the noise of the bear nearby.
I saw the polar bear ripping into a seal as I moved my right hand higher up the Dane axe and crouched up as I crept toward the bear. "Ahhhhhhh!" I cried out as I ran at it and raised my axe burying it in the bears side. The bears roar of rage felt as if it would shatter my eardrums as it turned around and batted my left arm with its giant paw causing me to lose my grip on the axe as I flew backwards into the snow. Grabbing my seax from its sheath I stared down the wounded bear which I could hear pant heavily in rage. As the bear roared once again and charged at me I rolled to the side dodging its jaws which were here centimeters from my neck. I used all of my strength to hop onto the top of the giant animal and began to ferociously stab it trying desperately to kill it as the beast tried to shake me off.
I held onto the beasts white fur as it tried to shake me off and I dug my seax into the beasts side before I was flung off and on my back in the snow my seax barely in my hand. I could faintly hear the bears giant steps as it loomed in my vision. I felt the bears jaws began to close around my neck as I used the last of my remaining strength to stay my seax into the beasts throat. I could feel the bear loss it's strength as it just collapsed to the side it's lifeless jaws still around my throat. I laid there till the sun began to set just regaining my strength and thanking the gods I was able to live. Finally I would push the bears face away from me and turn it over onto its back. The instructors said to take the virtue of the beast we have chosen we berserkers in training would have to eat its heart. So I cut open its chest and took out the bears raw heart then bit into it eating it all I felt nothing until I could have sworn the bear was once again staring into my face before it was back on the ground it's blood bright red against the white snow.
I picked up my axe which felt like a small stick in comparison to how heavy it used to be. 'I took the bears strength' I thought excitedly as I began to skin the creature. After skinning it I rolled the bears fur and began my trek back to the Berserkers training camp. The snow was bright against my eyes as I walked and I noticed my red hair was draped over my eyes so I slicked it back once again. I could feel the other animals of Greenland have their eyes on me though none came close as I made camp for the night. I had bested the apex predator and was now the new one I realized this as I made my fire and got ready to sleep. Morning came early and I thought how today must have been Thorsday two weeks since I had left home and two weeks since I had started tracking the bear before finally killing it yesterday. Breaking down camp I began to walk once again towards the berserkers training camp. It took another two weeks for me to get back to camp and while I was the last one to arrive I had survived and that's what mattered. Three other boys had died in their journey and their family compensated , the instructors then took my bears pelt to prepare it as the cloak I would wear upon becoming a full fledged berserker.
I noticed Jarsom and Hasirir had survived their journeys before Yarim got our attention once again. "All of you that have survived are the strong! From this day on we shall make you even stronger! You will become Berserkers the best warriors out there!" . His words he spoke to us inspired me as I felt a feeling of pride rise in my chest. I had killed the beast and taken it's powers I was now on my way to becoming a berserker the Norns had laid out my fate and I felt like it would be great. A few months later I was in the training yard with a wooden dane axe going for a large cut against one of the other trainees who held two swords. In fact I was training with Jarsom and while I had become stronger than him he truly had great endurance. Hasirir was sitting on the sidelines watching as in the few months that had passed by the instructors told us we would be split into four teams of three, I had joined Jarsom and Hasirir and we were now a small squad of berserkers in training. I had passed the initiation and now my training had only just began I am Orin Gyearmson and I will become a Berserker of Norway.
