Chapter 52 - Open the gate

Where was Theo when you needed him? I chucked evilly, feeling devil horns growing out of my head. He was the only one I know who has had their transformation and probably the only one that would let me get away with that without killing me.

Back when our clan did live show transformations on stage, Selena and Hazel did carry whistles. When they used it, I had thought it was just for show, like the way lion tamers carried whips to make more of an impact rather than having an actual purpose for it, but it made more sense now.

Then I needed to tell Molly to stop healing people, it wasn't good for her health and she'll end up burning out if she keeps going.

Charlie and I walked to the cafeteria and inside was busier than normal. Everyone was talking excitedly.

"What's going on?" I asked a girl in front of us in the queue.

"Cassandra McAllister got engaged last weekend." she said with a mischievous smile.

Oh that, I already knew. I nodded.

"Apparently the diamond on her engagement ring is massive!" Another girl gushed.

Yup, it was. It was this huge pink diamond that practically blinded you if you stared at it for too long.

"And the full moon is coming, it's going to be a supermoon this time, a Flower moon." The girl added excitedly.

The full moon was upon us again? I gulped, feeling a sense of nervousness rising. I used to look forward to the full moon like the way children looked forward to Christmas. Now knowing what I know and what it involved I was starting to feel apprehensive about it.

I looked at Charlie, he also seemed worried too. It was probably more pressure for the guys to transform, like a musculinity thing, kind of similar to their voice breaking. You either become a man or you remain a boy.

I ordered some shepherd's pie and a carrot cake before walking to the back of the dining hall to find seats. I shifted my gaze to the Prefect's table out of habit. There were a few people sitting there but Aiden wasn't one of them.

Philip happened to look up at the same time, our eyes met briefly for a second and I looked away immediately, feeling embarrassed by the fact that he had caught me snooping.

Charlie and I ate our lunch in silence, completely oblivious to the excitement all around us.

"Do you want to transform Aria?" Charlie asked all of a sudden.

I shrugged my shoulders, "I don't know. What about you?" I looked at him.

"I guess it would be good." He said as he pushed the diced carrots around his plate. He looked as sombre as I felt.

That evening, I sat alone in my room, waiting for Molly to come back. The rain had started and the sky darkened. I could hear the sound of the rain beating against the window and it sounded like someone had grabbed handfuls of pebbles and they were pelting it towards the glass, then repeating the same action over and over again.

Then suddenly, I felt the stir of a vision coming and that usual nauseated sensation was back. It was like someone was projecting a movie inside my head.

Inside a dimly lit room, the singular bulb overhead light flickered with each bolt of lightning.

Tied up on the chairs were two men back to back, their heads hung limply onto the side and their clothes appeared to be battered and bloodied.

I felt my heart missing a beat as I held back the urge to scream. I recognised those two people even from the outline of their body. It was so familiar, a sight I had seen millions of times and could account for it with my eyes closed. It was my father and uncle Colin.

A dark shadowy figure entered through the door, "hello Joseph, long time no see." His voice was cunning with an American twang. I already knew who it was.

My father squinted against the light, his cut swollen lip uttered the words, "Caleb."

The dark figure cackled like a hyena, not too dissimilar to Kendra's mad laughter. "You remembered."

Then licking his thin crinkly lips, the old man looked at my father with his hungry greedy eyes and spoke with fondness, much like a cat toying with a mouse before the final kill, "you see for me, you will always be the one that got away."

"No!" I screamed, my body bolted upright. I had to save them. Caleb was going to finish off what he started 17 years ago.

I flew out the door and ran down the stairs as fast as my legs could carry me. My clothes were completely soaking wet by the time I got to the school gate.

"Open the gate!" I shouted at the security guard through the window opening. "I need to go outside!"

"Show me your permission slip please?" The security guard said.

What permission slip? This was news to me. I didn't have one the last time and you'd still let me out.

"I don't have one." I tried to explain, "I went out the other day, Saturday morning, you had let me out then, remember? So please can you let me out again?"

"Sorry but you're not allowed to leave the school without a permission slip." The security guard said firmly.

If he wasn't going to open the gates then there was only one way left. Under his scrutinised eyes, I began climbing the metal gates. The bar was wet and slippery from the rain, I kept losing my footing and almost fell down a few times.

"Get off the gates please or I will report you to the headmaster." The security guard warned.

I ignored him and carried on climbing. The rain kept going into my eyes making it difficult to see clearly and I could only wipe it against my arm since both of my hands were gripping onto the bars tightly.

My palms were starting to burn from the friction and my arms were already feeling like they were ready to fall off. I wasn't even half way up the gates, it was too difficult, if only he could just open the bloody gate!
