The raindrops slid down the frigid glass, making my fingertips frosty when I traced their paths. I had just awoken from my little nap in the nook of the bay window. There was something in the distance, something lurking in the trees. I could not quite tell what the dark figure was that was behind the gnarled tree, so I rubbed the sleep from my eyes, only to see that the figure that was once there before, was now gone, without a trace. 'Get ahold of yourself, there was nothing there, just your imagination,' I scolded myself in my thoughts. There was a abrupt knock on my heavy, wooden bedroom door.
"Ellie!" called my mom, Shea, "The girls are waiting for you downstairs, hurry up!"
"Ok, I'll head on down in just a second."
I gently picked up the hardback book, "The Chronicles of Narnia", that had been lying face down in my lap, marking the page I had been reading, that was filled with adventures and suspenseful moments. I threw my hair into a quick messy bun and head on down to the giddy girls that were waiting for me.
I open my door, headed down the hallway, flew down the oak, spiral stairs, through the heavy, wooden front doors to the stone patio where the girls were laughing with their usual smiles on the faces.
"Hi Ellie!" squealed Marley, who gave me a quick embrace.
I was stunned for only a moment and replied, "Hey! What's goin' on? You two look happier than usual."
The other stunningly tall and skinny girl outside is Taylor, one of my closest friends.
"Well," she started, "we just came back from the fundraiser at school, and Mrs. Biggsby told us that a scout, from UK (University of Kentucky) is coming to watch the championship games that'll be held in our gymnasium!"
This was great news! I truthfully believe that our team will do phenomenal and I know that we will do our absolute best in order to make it to the championship.
"I think we need some kind of celebration, even if it is just a trip down to Mrs. Smith's Bakery down on South Ave.," said Marley, who would always look for someway to go to the little bakery.
"We have our up coming exams so we should take our books with us to study," explained Taylor.
"Sounds good!" I replied w a grin covering my face. We all loved it there, so I let my mom know that we were heading out, and we made our adventure down to South Avenue.
The trip was filled with laughter, giggles, and teasing until it started raining.
"Oh, you have to be kidding me! We are so close to!" complained Marley, sounding a little defeated. The town's little bakery was right around the corner when the big, fat rain drop started falling faster and faster drom the darkened sky.
"Just run, we should get there in about 2 or 3 minutes if we hurry, so we should be ok," said Taylor, trying to get us to go faster so we would not get more wet than we already had become.
We started jogging to the store, and not long after we turn the corner that the bakery is on. But little did I know that there would be a tall, sturdy figure, that would be blocking my way. Not realizing they were there, I ran straight into them, dropping everything, right in front of Mrs. Smith's Bakery. I quickly met their eyes to start apologizing, and found that I had ran straight into Liam Pierce (Dylan Thompson's cousin who was basically the school bully). His friends, Jacob Fredrickson and Aaron Adkins, started chuckling, dying of laughter from the mishap that just took place. I was worried he would be upset with me, but instead he started apologizing to me.
"Ugh, I'm sorry, I can be so clumsy sometimes," he started, "Oh shoot! I mad you drop all of your things! Here let me help pick up."
I dropped to my knees so quick I almost lost my balance, but my stuff was getting wet, books scattered across the concrete and my papers gliding into fresh puddles of water. Liam and I laughed it off trying to make the situation better, and once we had gotten my things picked up, we turned to our friends. They were all huddled together, howling with laughter, of course, and pointing at us, either because they found the incident funny or they were laughing at the slightly awkward tension.
Jacob, the skinny and tall boy with brunet hair and blue eyes, piped up and said, "Hey, were you guys going to Mrs. Smith's Bakery? We just grabbed some sweets and pastries on the way to the basketball court in the gymnasium."
Marley was still trying to gather herself, due to their ridiculous laughing session, and said through a shaky voice, "Yeah, we were! It's our favorite place to go studying, especially since Mrs. Smith is such a sweet lady. You guys are welcome to join us sometime when you aren't busy."
"Thank you for inviting us, we might have to take you up on that offer some other day. Well, I suppose we should go, we're heading to meet up with some of the other players, to practice before our tournament. We'll see you girls later!" Aaron called as the guys started heading off to the school.
We may live in a relatively small town, but I would not change one thing about it, you know everyone here, and everything is so nearby. This little town is as close as it get to being perfect. My little Town.
