"Where have you been? Are you okay?" Ruth heard Edwin's voice as he stared down at her.
She smiled, nodding her head. "Yes... I... just... I am fine." She avoided answering his first question.
He nodded his head and diverted his attention back to the people around him. The race had begun about fifteen minutes ago, and now they needed to wait to see the results.
In the meanwhile, the O'Dell family sat under the shade along with the various guests they were hosting today. Edwin introduced Ruth to many of his acquaintances. Ruth enjoyed the time, but her mind kept running back to what she saw earlier.
She excused herself from the group of people Edwin had just introduced her to, saying she needed something to drink. Edwin asked her again if she was alright, and she answered as she had done before.
Ruth walked away and to the table, where the drinks were served by the locals.
