Zoe had her unparalleled attention to what Ruth was saying, and now she understood why she stopped Edwin from throwing Lester out of Vincardine. They sat in silence for a while, but Ruth could tell that Zoe had something more to ask. So she waited patiently until she made up her mind.
"Ruth… aren't you… angy with me?"
"For what?"
"For…what my brother has done."
Ruth's face softened, seeing Zoe's guilt-ridden face. "No, I am not. You have done nothing wrong. Whatever the wrong has been done is by your brother and not you."
"But I am his sister. We are family."
"Zoe, everyone loves their family but it takes an iron will to stand against them if they are walking on the right path. If anything, I admire your courage in choosing the right side. You shouldn't burden yourself with what you haven't done. We don't need to carry the guilt of the wrongdoings of our family."
