Chereads / The Legendary Lightning Swordsman / Chapter 13 - Up The Tree

Chapter 13 - Up The Tree

Riot covered in cuts searched for Cain who seemed to have disappeared into thin air, which he probably had.

'Where the hell did he go?' He grumbled.

Seeing that night was approaching he was more cautious using his tremor authority to scan the place from time to time as he searched for a safe place to sleep.

Riot suddenly stopped as he felt a slight vibration on the ground. This was something a normal human could never sense unless he had the feet of an elephant.

He immediately enhanced the use of his authority, filtering out useless sounds and focusing on one direction. He then caught the slight sounds of breathing and a sound similar to the buzz of electric current.

He immediately had a frightening thought, breathed in and tried to calm his emotions.

'A magical beast approximately 60 meter north-east.' Riot estimated based on the strength and frequency of the sound waves he felt.

He slowly walked backwards. With every step he took the beast shrouded by trees and shrubs took a step towards him. 'Not good! I've been marked.'

He calmly looked for the tallest tree close to him. Finding one, he walked slowly towards it. Immediately he hurriedly began climbing the mossy tree with the help of his daggers.

As soon as he reached the first branch he saw a gaping mouth filled with sharp teeths lunge towards him. With a tug he drew himself up as the sound of jaws snapping was heard underneath him.

He looked down and saw what had lunged at him. It was a very large wolf about 3 meter tall with a claw pattern on the side of it's forelimb, electricity current flickered across it's blue and white fur.

It landed on the ground, walking around while staring up at Riot with menacing eyes. It looked to be preparing for another leap.

'Woah! A tier 3 lightning wolf. Just my luck!' Riot smiled.

Judging from the magical energy waves the wolf emitted Riot could guess it's power ranking in the monster grading scale.

This lightning wolf was a lesser tier 3 dungeon monster. It's dungeon type usually formed way deep into the forest.

It was such a ferocious monster that could only be faced single-handedly by a skilled combatant at the grade E+ energy rank.

Knowing that he wasn't high enough he hopped towards a higher branch.

The wolf seeing that it's prey was getting higher became annoyed. It opened it's mouth, summoning large amount of electricity across it's body before it. The electric arcs gathered into a small bright ball of energy. And then like a bolt of lightning it shot towards Riot hitting him.

The air bent under the immense heat as a sound akin to the intense screech of a braking car tyre sounded out.

Riot's was hit on the waist despite his attempt at dodging. His vest armor melted and he was almost flung off the tree into the awaiting wolf.

While grasping tightly unto the branch he felt the lightning energy surge within him. His blood boiled and his cuts began to itch, they were healing at a slow but visible rate.

Riot was surprised. He wasn't stunted or burned by the electric discharge instead he felt weird, like he could also do what the wolf did, as he observed his inner self.

The wolf watched as his prey remained motionless on the branch, thinking that it was stunned the wolf leaped onto the tree with sharp long claws digging into the tree bark. It bounded onto the closest branch hanging on with it's claws trying to get Riot who was now closer with his jaws.

Riot shelved the strange feeling he had and took out an expensive magic item that was within the assassin's ring. It looked like a blue monster core.

[Name: Crystal bomb]

[Type: Item]

[Rarity: Uncommon]

[Attack: Powerful]

[Attributes: None]

[Effects: Explodes to release a barrage of crystal shards.]

[Remark: Be careful of friendly fire.]

.....

Riot noticed the new attack rating and immediately knew it was above the Very strong attack rating and rightly so. The attack power of his enchanted dagger was rated as Very strong as this item was a single-use item it had a higher attack rating.

The item worked similar to a grenade, it was quite expensive and hard to purchase as they were always quickly bought by other more influential kingdoms. Although, there were two more crystal bombs in the ring he wasn't happy using such a scares resource it. But as his life was on the line he had to compromise.

Seeing that the wolf had gotten another foot on the branch and was about to leap at him he channeled mana into the magic item to trigger it. A light blue glow suddenly emanated from the ball. This immediately caught the wolf's attention causing it to halt.

Mana cores were delights monsters loved. It was also something needed for them to evolve. But this wasn't a monster core...

Riot waved the glowing ball about to explode and threw it at the wolf, it gladly opened it's mouth and gulped it down.

There were reasons why it was made to look like a mana core and this was one of them.

Riot then hopped to a farther branch which broke causing him to fall down.

Just as the wolf was about to leap at him, it's stomach burst apart causing meat, crystal shards and blood to splatter everywhere.

It's body which had separated into two parts fell down. The butt almost falling on Riot's face.

Riot's head spun on as he lay on the ground.

'I think I broke something.' He thought as he brought out a broken twig from his back.

Cain suddenly appeared beside him. With his paw he poked Riot's head.

"Leave me alone." Riot grudgingly pushed his paw away.

He wasn't a fool he definitely knew Cain had something to do with this. He even appeared like the cops in an action movie 'right on time'.

"Good to see you still alive." Cain looked happy.

"It was you, wasn't it?"

"Of course it was me! I goaded the wolf towards you. You didn't think you would get away trying to fool me, did you?" Cain hopped on his chest with a sneer.

"...And so as punishment you tried to kill me by letting a tier 3 lightning wolf after me." Riot eyes turned towards Cain.

Cain laughed. "Are you kidding! Of course I wouldn't let you die. You might lose an arm though, but not death!"

His cutely laughed, but Riot could only hear the cackling of a demon. "At first I just wanted to scare you, but seeing how well you reacted I became curious. I wondered if you could really kill it, even though you used a toy to get the job done you still earned some points in my opinion. That is why I have canceled the night training I had planned for you. So tonight you can sleep well, your training shall begin at the break of dawn."

"That's great and all, but what was the healing method you said you would teach me."

"Haven't you already felt it? Your blood is receptive to lightning. Whenever lightning charge flows through you your blood becomes excited, causing your cells to multiply at a faster rate. This would usually be at the cost of stamina. But I don't think you have to worry about that as you can quickly recover stamina and have no lack of food, because here your food looks for you." Cain winked.

Riot smiled wryly but after giving it some thought he believe it was a really useful perk of his. He would be able to heal faster as long as lightning energy circulated around his body.

Cain then thought a little. "Of course there is another way and with this way you can even heal others. But currently you cannot make use of this method as your grade is still too low."

"What does it have to do with my grade?"

"The extent of your control and magnitude of power by which you can use your authorities depends on your energy ranking.

Think of it like this, right now, you have my divinity which enables you to use the authorities of lightning, tremor, gravity and soul but your grade is still too low to control them well, you can't even sense the energy of gravity and soul because you are at such a low grade.

If I could use my authorities at a 90% when I was at my prime, it was only because I was at one of the highest grades ever attained. But right now I have been weaken considerably and can only use less than 50% power compared to before. At your current grade you can only use about 20% of what you should be able too at the highest grade. Which isn't good as I want to see you attain enough power to protect yourself before I pass on in a few months time."

Well that turned bleak all of a sudden.

Riot thought before asking. "Isn't there a way too prolong your lifespan?"

Cain laughed heartily. "Haha! Are you worried about me? Don't worry by the time your training truly kick's-off, you would be wishing I died faster." He then hopped down.

Pointing at the heavily cracked mana core on the ground next to the gruesome looking wolf corpse, "That's it's core, now come. I'll teach you how to absorb it's mana essence."
