"Let's do this Aria!"
Goblins.
Small pale green toddler-shits. Those introductory monsters in many games and media. They're typically savage murderous twerps who like to kidnap women. I get the feeling that these rules apply in this world as well.
Gross.
(Kenji we've got goblins here. I'd guess they're around E tier each.)
(Alright Aria, let's get them.)
Kenji rockets forward with incredible speed. If I wasn't a ghost my cheeks would be flapping like a dog with its head out of a window. Within a second we've crossed the ten meters to the first goblin.
Kenji yells as he kicks the goblin, and it goes flying into the cave and we hear a dull thud.
(Kenji what the hell.) I say as I look around us. The four remaining goblins have surrounded us but Kenji doesn't seem to have noticed.
The four goblins start to close in on us with their clubs raised. I hear them chuckle "Heh heh heh." It seems as though they don't have much sentience and prefer to focus on killing their prey, even if it's so unbelievably stronger than them like Kenji is.
(Kenji, behind you, goblin's swinging his club, duck and counter-attack.)
"Understood!" Kenji says, ducking under the goblin's club swing. Kenji may be overpowered, and that club is never killing him, but it's my job to make sure he doesn't get hurt. He's my brother and I can't even get hurt here. I sigh my ghost sigh of relief as it misses.
Kenji turns around and punches the goblin in the face. It's about a meter and a half tall. Why are these goblins the same height as me. It's not fair. I don't even have legs anymore. This is the worst. Nevermind, I'm shorter than a goblin. Life is not fair.
The goblin Kenji punches flies backwards just like the one he kicked. I feel something happening. My [Mana Sense] skill is telling me that one of these green rascals is about to cast a spell against us. I think it's a fire spell, which is definitely dangerous.
Kenji's turned his focus to the duo of goblins who aren't casting a spell.
(Kenji watch out! Behind you!)
He jumps to the side looking back as a large ball of fire comes rocketing from the spellcaster goblin. "Jesus!" He says with his eyes wide open. "They haven't heard of fire safety have they." That fireball comes careening into the other two goblins, charring them. "Ah that's convenient, now there's just one more."
(Hey Kenji, try using your [Hero Judgement] Skill to finish this guy off. Let's pick up one of the goblin's weapons for it. We want to be safe against this magic user I think. I'm not sure exactly how much magic is going to hurt so let's just play it on the cautious side.)
The goblin chatters and dances around, he's clearly angry that his friends have been taken out. This one seems to have some semblance of mental capacity, so it could be a threat to Kenji's wellbeing. That's no good.
"I hope this works with a club instead of a sword. [Hero Judgement]!" He says as a bolt of lightning strikes the club Kenji holds above his head. A large wave of mana ripples out from this bolt of lightning.
(What the hell was that. That bolt of lightning was scary, man.)
(Yeah. Let's take this guy out.)
(Please do brother.)
His eyes are glowing golden after using the skill, and he jumps towards the mage goblin. I can see fear on its pathetic little face as Kenji draws closer to it.
SWING! Kenji's club imbued in the light of the so-called [Blessed Magic] passes right through the goblin as it cries out, seeming like it's crying out for the mercy that won't come. The goblin turns to ash as a single stone drops out of it.
I feel mana swirling around inside of that stone. Is this the so-called 'Magic Stone,' the heart of the goblin? These normally act as a proof of kill and can be sold for money.
Since this fight is over and I don't sense any other monsters around, I decide to stop my [Pseudo Possession] of Kenji. My ghost body floats out of him with an audible woosh.
"Aria, Aria, wasn't that really fun? I went like bam! and then I dodged the fireball and it was like vwoom and then I used that skill and it was just so cool!"
"It might have been fun for you, but it was stressful as hell for me. I had to pay attention to everything going on around you, practically dragging you out of the way of any sneak attack. That fireball was really scary Kenji." I say, breathing heavily. That fight made me incredibly anxious. I don't want Kenji to get hurt, and the way he fights is cutting it too close for my currently dead heart.
"Yeah but I trust you Aria~ So it should be fine for me to just focus on the target in front of me."
"If you trust me, please stay safe. Seeing you almost get hit by that club and fireball made me nervous. I don't want to have a panic attack mid-fight because of you, so try to at least look at your surroundings."
"Understood Aria, I'll do my best next time."
"Kenji, pick up those rocks that dropped from the goblins, I bet we can sell them. Put them in your backpack."
"Why don't you put them in your backpack Aria."
My brother is a moron. Has he forgotten that I am a ghost who was possessing him not two minutes ago.
"Kenji, I'm a fucking ghost. My backpack is part of the ghost body. If you tried to put those rocks in my backpack they'd fall. Please for the love of god think before you speak."
Kenji's face blushes red in embarrassment. "S-sorry Aria I'm really sorry." Then he started to cry. "Hey Aria."
"Kenji are you good?" I ask, concerned for him. I tilt my head and activate my [Tangibility] so I can pat him on the head.
"It really just hit me. We're stuck in another world Aria. We can't go back home ever. That guy, he killed us Aria. We're dead back home. Our parents lost both of their kids today. I-I-I don't want to d-die again Aria. It was cold. I'm scared.
After you said you were a ghost it really hit me. We're really dead, and we're in this foreign world with things that want to kill us.
I don't want to fight a war against a demon king that I don't know anything about. I don't want to get hurt or die Aria, and I don't want you to get hurt either. I'm terrified. I want to live."
He's really shaken up over this. It's fair though, he's been brought into a brand new world after getting killed and watching his sister die in front of him. Plus, he's been revived as a legendary hero, whereas the person he's closest to in the world is dead. A ghost.
Frankly, I'm just as scared as he is. I don't know if I can die or if I'm going to live forever. I don't know what's worse.
"Kenji, let's start a fire and you need to get some rest. I'm just as scared as you are."
"Aria, you say you're scared, but how are you so calm right now?" He cries.
"I'm not calm at all. I'm trying to hold it in so that we don't both fall to pieces. I'll save my tears for later Kenji."
"I-I see. Sorry."
We get a fire going with some firewood that we collected and I remain tangible, allowing Kenji to rest his head on my lap as he often did, and he drifts off to sleep after eating his boxed lunch that he was going to bring to school.
I've decided what we have to do. For both Kenji's sake and mine, we're going to live. We are going to stay out of trouble. Neither of us want to die, so we're going to try and avoid anything that could really get us killed. Neither of us want to fight in a war against a Demon King or anyone for that matter. We will live out our lives in peace, the opportunity that was taken from us with our death and reincarnation.
I slowly await the approach of the morning, wondering what will occur on our days to come.
