Wang Jingyuan and Yan Qiufeng held their breaths as they listened to the guards thunder out the door and hurry away. The night quieted once more, with their pounding hearts the only sounds in the room. Still, Wang Jingyuan did not dare to move. It wasn't until her heart returned to beating at a normal pace did she carefully whisper, "Are they all gone?"
Yan Qiufeng stretched his neck and risked a peek around the doorway.
"All gone."
"Are you sure they're gone gone? And won't come back?"
"Not any time soon, I think."
Wang Jingyuan breathed a long sigh of relief. She realized that she was still leaning against Yan Qiufeng's chest. Oop. Slightly embarrassed, she pushed herself away—perhaps a little too fast, because she stumbled. Yan Qiufeng grabbed her arm to steady her.
"Sorry," she mumbled.
