"We were struck by lightning," Du Jiahui said. She rolled up her sleeve, and Wang Jingyuan saw faint red lines branching out along Du Jiahui's arm, like the branches of a tree.
"These are Lichtenberg figures! I remember studying them for one of my events in Nerd Club," Wang Jingyuan said. "They're created when your blood vessels burst from the electric discharge and heat, and they mark out the path the lightning took in your body."
Du Jiahui nodded. "Exactly. You remember how Tianhong had swim practice that day? I was watching from the bleachers. Practice was underway when storm clouds gathered, and we saw lightning flashing. You know how unsafe it is to be in a pool during a thunderstorm, so the swim team cut practice short and everyone got out to leave. I went down to meet Tianhong and give him his towel, but I slipped on the pool side and fell in."
"Oh my gosh! Jiahui, you don't know how to swim!" Wang Jingyuan exclaimed.
