Sophie sat on the bean bag that was near the bathroom door without uttering a single word, as she was not sure about what to say. Steven sat on the bed quietly looking down and thinking hard. Rain was still bent on the chair with her head in her hands and sobbing.
She wanted to be in that world, she was dreaming about it ever since Steven came and told her about it, it was not only because of her mother but because it was the thing that made her feel special and now she finally said the fact that she might not have the powers aloud, that was like accepting it which she was afraid of doing it till now.
Sophie kept quiet as she knew what was said but was afraid that she might be wrong, but it was clear on both Steven's and Rain's faces. She wanted so bad to tell Steven about what she discovered just the day after he went away, although before when she was 12, she wanted to have nothing with the world, she wanted to live in peace after her powers had come back, she felt different, and now she had changed her prescription about powers and new world, now she wanted to know more, get included into it. But now, she didn't know what to do, as Rain was thinking she doesn't have any power but Sophie knew she had them that would only prove the theory of 'both the child inheriting powers is very rare', true.
Would Rain get hurt? She thought if I told them now about my powers, would she be mean or rude to me? After all, she was the one who wanted powers and I was the one who wanted nothing to do with that world, would Steven accept it? Would he help me? And all the answers that came into her mind were starting with no. No Rain would not be hurt but be distressed, no, she would not be mean or rude she will simply not talk to anyone, no Steven won't help you and all and all.
She was sure in her mind that everything will get worse once she told anyone about her and still she wanted to tell someone, maybe because she was done with being the second daughter and the small one.
Steven sat on the bed looking down at his feet while thinking hard over what Rain said, is she lying? Why would she, his mind replied, look at her she is crying, she can't lie about something that big?
If she is indeed speaking the truth, then does that mean I was feeding her false hope, just like Sophie had said 2 years ago? Am I at fault? But what if her powers would come once she is 18? those cases are rare but some got their powers when they were 18. I need to talk to someone, I need to make my hunch sure, I can't give more false hope to anyone right now.
Finally, after thinking hard he stood up. Sophie looked up at him.
"What is it?" She asked, hearing her Rain looked up at him as well with tears still visible in her eyes he looked straight at her.
"You might be wrong. I just need to confirm one thing wait for me here I will come in 1 day."
"At this time?" Sophie questioned.
Rain was looking at him and he looked at the clock which was showing, 11.52 am. It's still early he thought. He looked down at Sophie.
"I have to go but not now, I will go in the afternoon, and clear my doubts," He stated and sat on the bed once again sighing. I will have to ask them about it, they will know surely, he thought. After all, all the kids from this state go to that academy for power control education.
"I must go'" Rain stood up and without waiting for any reply went straight towards the door and opened it, "I have things to do," she said while leaving and closing the door behind her.
Sophie and Steven sat still not knowing what to do when Sophie decided, I must tell him, he is the only one who knows a lot about it, and if I don't tell anyone I won't be able to control it and it would get in front of everyone somehow anyway.
"I…" She looked at him who looked back at her. She gulped and tried again, "I wanted to tell you something…" She looked into his eyes.
His eyes were fixed on her, while green in them shined like an emerald, she couldn't focus is she kept on looking at it so she shifted her gaze to her hands, it is better this way, she thought.
"Yeah go on…" Steven encouraged.
"So after all the theory came right…" She uttered, "About 2 children inheriting powers from their one non-human parent is 10%, that is rare…"
"You want to brag about, how right you were?" Steven stated while cutting her off.
"No.. not at all…" She looked up at him." I was trying to say if that came right then maybe the second theory could be right."
"Yes, we were thinking the same but Rain…" He stopped and looked at her in amazement. "You…"
"I don't know how but I think I…" She started trying to defend herself.
"Are you sure? Did you saw or do anything? When?" He was shocked and in his situation, he started bombarding her with questions.
She was not sure if his shock was out of happiness or sadness or hurt or something else, she felt like it was a great mistake telling him.
"I…" She stopped without knowing what to say.
He looked into her brown eyes which were reflecting the fear that was peeking out from her heart, he looked at how she was holding both of her hands into each other and biting her lips while looking down, am I scaring her? He thought.
"I am sorry…" He said and Sophie looked up at him, " I didn't mean to snap at you just now, but I was deep in my thought."
"it's okay," She replied and looked down again doubtfully.
He thought, one time she tried opening to me and I made her go back inside her hole, agh, what an idiot I am. I need to know what she was saying, I need to know if what I think was saying is true or not.
"Sophie, I am not sure about the theory, like there always are rare cases and the positive side of me always looks it as it could be the next rare case, but yeah you could be right." He agreed and looked at her kindly. She is just a kid, he remembered, who had gone through too much.
"I… tried to look at it in the same way," She muttered.
"But now I see little hope." He finally let it out.
"Me too," Sophie mumbled.
They both kept quiet for few minutes.
"I came to know about them when I was 9." Sophie let it out. While still looking at her hands.
He looked at her, "How?"
"I was doing my project with my mom and something made me angry. We were drawing birds on paper and I made them fly, my mom was proud of me at that time and I was just a little kid who wanted to make her mother more proud"
He waited for her to speak more and she did after a long pause, "My mom told me that I am special but I need to blend in with everyone and never try to use them in front of others, and thats what I did. I tried to tell Rain about it once but she was always too busy to notice me."
"When my mom died my powers went away too and I thought it was just a coincidence or a dream but…" She looked at him.
"But?" He looked back.
"When you were going back, remember Rain and I fought…"
He nodded.
"They came back when I was down in the hall, I was angry at her for ignoring me and for treating me like nothing, in my anger they came back, I made things fly again and since then I am looking at the routine you have given Rain and I am practicing the same…" She was looking at him or more like searching in his eyes for a hint of disappointment or anger or anything.
He thought, I with the other was one of those people in her life who made her become like this, afraid to speak the truth, afraid to show what she was, just because it may anger, hurt or make someone around her sad, and that was hard to digest, that he was one of those people whom she feared.
He wanted to change it, but not before knowing a bit more about her and Rain.
