Chapter 88 - A inevitable choice

The first time Sam saw Yana at the project meeting, he was of the same opinion as Mr K. Just another woman who climbed into beds to get to her position.

Sam, however, was by no means looking down on her. Instead, he felt these types of people were like kindred spirits to him. After all, Sam also did whatever was necessary to rise in ranks.

Be it to blackmail, flatter or destroy other people's lives, he had to become a devil in disguise to survive in this unfair world. Sam had neither the looks, money, fame, power nor talent.

In this world, ruled by politics, reigned by absolute governments who held all power, Sam with no affinity, passion or talent for politics stood no chance to make it to the top of the tier list, thus he chose business as his major because Sam might not be talented but he had skills.

His tongue was slippery and loose enough to not feel shame, so he flattered, flattered and flattered to no end.

It wasn't until very later when Sam managed to kiss up a million asses of important people, he knew the truth. This world wasn't really ruled by politics, instead, it was the illusion the governments led on.

There was no democracy as people wanted to believe and the governments that flaunted the people's rights and freedom were all simply lying. In this world, in every country, it was all just one large dictatorship disguised and hidden, so subtle that no one noticed it.

Sam only happened to hear it by chance as he was briefly the assistant of his boss. During one of the get-togethers where the higher-ups filled themselves with liquor and beauties, Sam overheard.

Everything that was going on was played to a certain melody, led greedy hands and moved puppets. The governments were all in one cahoot pursuing a certain goal, yet they didn't know they were just attached to strings controlled by a large organisation.

Yet all of this was so vague, Sam didn't understand anything. The only thing he understood was that his boss was someone frightening high up and not just a mere CEO. All colours left Sam. In this vast ocean, someone like Sam was only akin to a plankton, small yet crucial as the big sharks' and whales' fodder.

That was why Sam was more afraid of his boss than Yana, but he never imagined that Yana turned out to be a big fish not just a grain of sand at the bottom of the ocean.

Sam thought she was lower than him when in reality it was the other way around. But even if it was the case, Yana was still no match for his boss. Yana didn't know the terrifying truth of the world yet.

"I-I- su…rr…ender," Sam choked out and Yana finally let him breathe. The cloth glided from his throat like soft cotton before it turned into steel once again and this time bound his hands.

Sam coughed and swallowed enough to get his dry throat wet, "Is…this necessary?"

His voice was hoarse and he gasped for air, his body felt limp and he had no energy left. Even though he was in this state and surrendered, Yana saw it clearly. His eyes still hadn't given up. This was enough for Yana to know that Sam wasn't going to sell himself out like Mr K and M. He was a tougher nut to crack. Yana had to figure out the reason quickly to break him.

"Who's behind this?" although Yana more or less guessed the answer, she still probed Sam.

"M-Me," Sam's voice still wasn't back and he indignantly looked at Yana.

"Don't be ridiculous, you're too stupid for this."

Yana's mocking tone slightly stabbed Sam's heart. She has seen through him. Of course, Sam was too dumb, too average to be able to do anything. It was only a threat and disguise he worked on so hard and so long that gave people the impression he was a sly fox, clever and cunning.

Maybe if Sam had put his effort into something properly than keeping up that appearance- no, he would've ended up lower.

It was even long before birth decided, one's fate. Even if Sam worked hard, in this kind of world it was impossible for the honest and genuine, kind and hard-working to strive. There would've been no difference.

This rotten world.

Yana saw various emoticons flashing past Sam's eyes and was surprised. Sadness, regret and hopelessness, then brief anger. Yana wondered what went through his head but whatever it was she didn't pity him. Everyone for themselves.

"Is your boss this scary, you'd rather have me strangle you to death than go to prison?"

Once these words fell, Sam flinched. Yana has already figured him out.

"Ha," Sam laughed in a self-deprecating manner, "You've got no idea, miss. You've no idea how scary this world is."

Yana crouched in front of Sam who sat on the ground and leaned against the wall, "I do. More than you."

She wasn't lying. The terrifying look in Yana's eyes convinced Sam. This woman…was ready to give up everything. No, she had nothing to lose in the first place.

"Let me make this short," Yana pulled out her phone, "No matter how scary your boss is, you don't want to offend me."

Yana showed Sam a profile, "Since you seem to know one or more things about the truth then you'll recognise them too, right?"

As Yana said, Sam's eyes widened and he trembled.

"Offending me is offending them."

"That's your backer?" Sam finally managed to press out through his shock.

"Yes," Yana put her phone back. Someone even his boss had to lower his head to, "Ahaha."

Sam broke out in a bitter laugh. So, it was only him. He was the only plankton here. This woman wasn't a big fish, she could very well be a shark working for the giant whales. A perfect description, carrying out the dirty work with their killer teeth.

Since Sam seemed to know more than he let on, Yana thought it was a shame to lose him but even if he was going to become a lackey, he wasn't be useful.

"Ok, I'll do as you say. I'll confess and prove your innocence."

''You won't receive protection from our side though,'' Yana glanced at him before standing up.

"No need. I cherish a painless death than being exposed to the deepest sewers hiding the truth."

"It's really a shame, I've come to like you."

Sam reminded Yana of herself. At some point, she did also think that dying or remaining ignorant was better than knowing the truth, the real reality but then there was no point in living anyways. This hard path was all she had left.

Sam didn't say anything as Yana fetched Seli and freed her. He also didn't say anything the whole ride as he sat tied up in the backseat of the car when Yana drove to the police. Luka has already arranged everything.

The stage was set and soon all the players, actors arrived to carry out this small meaningless fodder for the public who devoured drama, gossip and misfortune as it was their lifeline.

Sam only stared out of the window. His sleazy and sticky features were nowhere to be seen. Instead, it was only the face of an average person who tried to survive in a world where everything had already been predetermined and fought with whatever he got only to walk down the wrong path.

But now he wanted to free himself from the shackles of this inescapable nightmare.

This was the choice he made.
