To be honest, Kenji had no idea what Amaya had shouted. All he knew was that whatever the spider woman was, it was surely something not to be trifled with. He could tell that much from the fear in Amaya's dark eyes.
Now that he was thinking about it, why were her eyes no longer silver?
Before he could stop and think about it, the spider woman lunged forward on her arachnid legs and pounced on Amaya, knocking her to the ground and keeping her movements restricted. Upon seeing this, Kenji's brain kicked into overdrive, causing him to run and slide across the floor to snatch the katana as quickly as possible.
Once the sword was in his hands, Kenji hurriedly released the blade from its saya, catching the attention of the spider woman. It turned its head, all eyes staring blankly at Kenji, but the boy held his ground. He gritted his teeth and gripped the tsuka tightly despite having no prior experience in wielding such a weapon. After all, he didn't have any other courses of action to free his friend from the grasp of an eight-legged demon.
Without thinking twice, the boy charged at the spider woman, which released Amaya to pursue its new challenger. He raised the katana over his shoulder with the intention of stabbing the demon in the eyes, but within two steps of approaching it, Kenji suddenly dropped the katana. Rather than deliberately attacking the spider woman, he tucked and rolled beneath it, almost getting caught in its loose silks in the process.
Kenji collided with a table just before he rolled to a stop on the other side of the room. He twisted his body in a panic to reach out for the katana, but just as he had located it, the sword was swiped out of range. Kenji leapt to his feet and glanced over to Amaya, who now had the katana in hand. The girl approached the spider woman with her teeth gritted fiercely.
"You…" Amaya hissed, coming to a halt to allow the spider woman to charge at her again. Rapidly, it crawled forward, giggling as it did so, yet Amaya looked prepared to take it on.
Meanwhile, Kenji ran for the kitchen to grab a knife while the demon was distracted and threw open every drawer and cabinet. By the time he turned back around, with a carving knife in hand, Amaya was already dodging the spider woman's lunges. She ducked down, slicing a leg to temporarily immobilize it before she made a mad dash for the open doorway where the demon had entered.
Kenji opened his mouth to ask her what the hell she was doing, but by the time he could even comprehend what was going on, Amaya was out the door with the spider woman on her tail. Kenji decided to scrap the knife idea and tossed it aside so he could rush out the doorway after his friend.
The cold air hit Kenji like a freight train as he skidded to a halt to prevent himself from falling over the balcony railing. He shocked in a deep breath and whirled around, noticing that Amaya was gone and the spider woman was hurriedly limping toward him. That was, until a blur of movement from above caught his eye.
"Up here!" Amaya called, waving her hand to signal for Kenji. "Can you teleport?"
"I—" Kenji hesitated and cost himself all the spare time he had. His eyes fell on the spider woman squeezing herself through the doorway and reaching out out her free legs to grab at him. With his heart beating rapidly, Kenji pushed his back against the railing and allowed himself to freefall.
For those short moments, Kenji was weightless. He closed his eyes, praying to any god listening that he would teleport to safety, and let the universe do the rest. It wasn't like he had any control over his ability, anyway.
However, within a couple seconds of nearing the ground, something wrapped around Kenji's body and gripped him tightly. Before he could make impact with the pavement, he was yanked aside and sent flying into a cluster of half empty trash cans.
Kenji opened his eyes and grasped his side with a groan once he was able to recollect the breath that had been knocked out of him. He rolled over in an attempt to get up, only to realize that a cord was wrapped around him from his shoulders down to his ankles. His initial thought was that the cord was of the demon's doing, but the clicking of heels on concrete made him think otherwise.
From the shadows of the surrounding apartment buildings emerged a tall woman in black, skin-tight clothing with a leather jacket layered on top. She walked slowly, keeping ahold of the massive rifle in her hands, and stopped to point the muzzle at his face. In turn, Kenji clenched his teeth in frustration. Now that the initial shock had faded, he was beyond miffed.
"Who are you? Let me go!" He thrashed once and pulled against the cords to little avail. "Please? My friend is—"
The woman kicked Kenji hard enough to turn him completely over, which silenced him for a few moments until she used her heel to turn him back over.
Scared and confused, Kenji stared silently up at the woman. Her bodysuit came all the way up to the bridge of her nose to hide most of her facial features, but he could see the vibrance of her soft, lilac eyes that glittered in the dark. The color of her irises beautifully contrasted with her short silver hair that was shaved on one side and pulled up into a tight bun in the back.
The sound of something heavy landing nearby caught the woman's attention, causing her to glance away for a split second. Kenji decided to try and throw her off balance by thrashing again while she was distracted, but she quickly glanced back to him before taking off in the opposite direction. Suddenly, she was gone.
Kenji rolled back over and started to wriggle his body in a futile attempt to free himself while the constant sound of crashing continued on in the background. He stopped when he heard what sounded like Amaya's voice followed by her literally landing in front of him.
"Amaya!" Kenji called out immediately as he tried to pull himself to his feet without thinking twice.
Upon hearing him, Amaya turned her head, revealing her bloodied face that obscured her fine features. Her eyes widened, one brown and one metallic silver, right before a well dressed man landed beside Kenji.
Within seconds, the man lunged toward Amaya and grabbed her by the collar of her ripped shirt before she could react. Helpless, Kenji watched him shove Amaya to the ground while the assault rifle slung over his shoulder gleamed under the street lamps.
Kenji cried out over the sound of someone else landing behind him and kept screaming as a sharp object pierced his forearm with great force. He refused to look away from the struggle between Amaya and the man until his body went numb.
Seconds later, the world went black.
