Matt was hesitating to tell her the truth because Layla and Maria were her best friends. They didn't do it in front of him often because Matt would get pissed, but they would talk about Ren behind her back on occasion.
It wasn't anything truly terrible; just snide, catty remarks about how she didn't dress nicely, even though she had the figure for it. They had also talked smack about how she would still go out right after working with her uncle.
