The Syrian Army troops blockading Aleppo were divided into three major groups, with each group blocking the major routes into and out of the city.
There were other splinter groups holding other minor locations, but these were inconsequential.It was these three groups that were responsible for the blockage.
The pro-Assam dynasty soldiers blocked off access into and out the city just outside the city limit, well out of the toxin's fog area.
While they blocked off access both ways, their true objective was primarily to prevent anyone from leaving. It was just that their presence prevented anyone with half a brain from approaching the city.
They pretty much only had to stand there with their weapons and vehicles. They didn't have to do anything else.
