CH17: AMBUSH.
"PULL BACK NOW!!!" Second Lieutenant Kunle Balogun-Keshinro roared to the team.
Unfortunately, it was too late. All containers in 100 meters radius around them flung open and they were trapped. Even though they didn't reach the center of the port, they had still entered the Kill-box. Surprisingly though, the hostiles didn't shoot but merely pointed their guns at them.
"Alpha 1, Alpha 1. what's happening?" Korede asked from the comms.
"Nothing. They are just aiming at us." Second Lieutenant Kunle Balogun-Keshinro answered in a low voice.
Korede and the other team members had quickly been making their way to the port center to back up Alpha team. When they didn't hear the sound of gunfire, they had been hopeful that Korede was wrong. Alas, Second Lieutenant Kunle Balogun-Keshinro's response crushed their wishful thinking.
"Bravo 3. What's the situation? Can they fight their way out?" Korede asked hopefully
"Negative. They are surrounded. More than 30 hostiles in sight. There's no suitable cover around them. Any wrong moves and they'll be riddled with bullets." Abdul-Lateef replied while viewing the situation from his sniper scope.
Korede bit his lips as he heard Bravo 3's report. He knew even with Abdul-Lateef's help, Alpha team wouldn't make it alive if anyone started shooting. He was beginning to understand the enemy's objective. Unfortunately, he realised too late.
As the stand-off between the Alpha team and the hostiles continued, a man in a suit stepped out. The way the hostiles made way for him signified that he was their leader. The man walked close to them causing some team members to point their guns at him. The man didn't seem bothered by this though as he continued to walk towards them. He stopped a few meters away from the team. The distance was close enough that he seemed within the reach of the Alpha team but far enough that the hostiles could shoot them down without harming the man should they make an attempt to use him as a hostage.
"Put down your weapons and surrender. You are surrounded. There's no need for needless bloodshed. You are just hired guns, there's no need to risk your life for your employers. We won't harm you. We merely wish to invite you somewhere so that you can educate us about your employer." The man said with a smile on his face. The confident and smug smile he had on his face made the impulsive Sergeant Daniel Wike want to shoot him in the face but he managed to hold it in.
By now, Bravo team had made it close by. Korede heard what the man said and a weird look appeared on his face. What the man just said made him realise something important. If it wasn't for the dire situation at hand, he would have smiled.
"Alpha 1, surrender. Trust me." Korede said, shocking Second Lieutenant Kunle Balogun-Keshinro. He then told Second Lieutenant Kunle Balogun-Keshinro to do something.
Seeing the shocked expression on Second Lieutenant Kunle Balogun-Keshinro's face, the man in suit erroneously thought the soldier was shocked by his proposal. The pleased smile on his face got wider. Second Lieutenant Kunle Balogun-Keshinro looked around. He saw no gaps at all for any possible escape.
'I'm trusting you with my life here, little bro.' Second Lieutenant Kunle Balogun-Keshinro whispered. In truth, he wasn't hesitant to listen to Korede's advice. Even if the situation wasn't so dire, he would still have done it. That's how much trust existed between the brothers. Korede similarly trusted Kunle with his life. The same held true for Kola. This trust extended among all Balogun family members. As unrealistic as it may seem, their bond was just that strong.
"Put your weapons down." Second Lieutenant Kunle Balogun-Keshinro ordered his team. They also knew they had no other option. They slowly put their weapons down. Second Lieutenant Kunle Balogun-Keshinro also removed the backpack he was carrying and threw it to the floor. The others did the same. Then they raised their hands up in surrender.
Unbeknownst to the hostiles, Second Lieutenant Kunle Balogun-Keshinro had taken out something from the side of his bag.
The man took a zip tie out of his trouser pocket and walked up to Second Lieutenant Kunle Balogun-Keshinro. He wanted to personally cuff the leader's hands to completely stroke his sense of victory. He took Second Lieutenant Kunle Balogun-Keshinro's hands and tied them behind his back. Other hostiles came and tied the hands of the others in the same way.
The team was ushered into a container. Before long, two trucks came out of the container. It got into a convoy formation with other trucks and vehicles that came out of different containers. The convoy quickly made their way out of the port.
"Bravo 1, what should I do? Should I stop them?" Abdul-Lateef asked Korede for instructions. His Barrett Sniper rifle had enough power to stop a truck.
"Negative. Stand down. Let them go."
Korede had not even finished speaking before the convoy, which just got out of the port, split and moved in different directions. Even without Korede's instructions, there was no longer anything Abdul-Lateef could do. Alpha team had been placed in the truck inside a cargo container. None of the Bravo team members saw which truck, out of the two that came out, they were placed in. Now, with the convoy splitting in different directions, Abdul-Lateef couldn't be sure of which truck to stop. Not to mention if they could deal with all the hostiles without getting Alpha team killed. He could only stand down.
"Copy that. Standing down."
"Rendezvous with us back here. We'll plan our next step."
Korede and the remaining Bravo team member swept the port to make sure all the other tangos had left before making their way to the control center to meet up with Champion. Abdul-Lateef had also arrived using Eze's Okada.
Korede had been in thought all through. With the arrival of Abdul-Lateef, the team couldn't hold it in anymore.
"Hey, why did you tell the team leader to surrender? We could have fought our way out." Mary shouted at Korede.
"They would have died if we did that." Korede explained. He knew Mary was just worried about her friends and teammates.
"You've holding something back since the beginning of the mission. I think it's time you let us into your head, Balogun." Temitope said.
Korede and Temitope won't exactly agree that they were friends and claim to be rivals but they both can't deny that they were close. They had a sort of unspoken agreement between them. Any time one called the other by their surname then it meant they were serious or they had been annoyed or even angered by the other. So, Korede knew he had to explain or this matter wouldn't end well for the team's unity and morale.
"Alright, I will explain but we need to get in contact with HQ first. There's something important the Commander needs to know."
