Chapter 72 - Chapter 71- Aroma

I wake to the smell of food and Wam's deep voice, "Lee…Kynnnnlllleeee…wake up beautiful, I made you breakfast."

When I open my eyes, I see him sitting on the edge of the bed with a tray in his lap. "There you are. Good morning sleepyhead."

"Mmm…something smells delicious," I whisper in a sleepy voice.

Wam laughs so hard in response, I feel the bed shake. I look at Wam's eyes and notice he's smiling so wide, that just a hint of crow's feet were starting at the edges of his eyes. I liked that Wam smiled often enough to cause wrinkles. He deserved to be happy. I couldn't resist my answering smile. Seeing this man smile, made me feel happy.

I sat up against the headboard of the bed and met his gaze, "I think you wore me out," I stated.

"I think so. You feel better after a nap?" Wam asked.

I nodded and tried to look at the tray of food, but he had placed a cover over it. What a sweet gesture to bring me breakfast in bed. "So what did you make for breakfast? Thank you by the way. That was very sweet of you."

"Oh baby, I wish I could be here to do this everyday," he said with a charming smile. "I made omelettes and toast. Hopefully you like omelettes," he said in a questioning tone.

"You need to stop worrying about what I like."

Wam's eyes got big and he asked, "is that your subtle way of telling me you don't like omelettes?"

"What? Goodness no. I like eggs and almost every ingredient normally put in them. You worry too much," I reassured with a smile as I pulled the cover off the plate. I could feel Wam studying me as I looked at the plates, so I kneeled up and gave him a peck on the cheek before settling back against the headboard. "Thank you for making breakfast," I whispered with a smile.

"You're most welcome Lee," he returned and crawled up with his back against the headboard to mimic how I was sitting before placing the tray on the bed between us. We each took a plate and began to eat.

I heard my phone 'ding', and reached over to grab my cell phone off the bedside stand on my side of the bed. I've slept here two nights and already I'm thinking of it as my side? The text was from Kedron which surprised me since he is unable to text without help now.

Kedron: Were you still planning to bring my clothes today?

So I typed a quick response after seeing it was already 10AM.

Kynlee: Yes dear brother. Remember you told me to stop visiting so early so you could get more sleep? I'm simply trying to comply with your wishes. I washed and dried your clothes, and I'll bring them this afternoon.

Kedron: Thank you.

When I was finished, I put the phone back on the night stand and resumed eating. "This is really good Wam," I praised.

"I'm glad you like it. I don't cook a lot, but the things I cook, I'm fairly good at. Omelettes are one of those things," he explained. "So do you have plans for the week? I'm going to miss you while I'm in Red Wing."

He was so sweet, but I wasn't sure how to respond, so I went with honest but need to know only. I was unsure how the week would go, and didn't want to open a can of worms or hurt his feelings if not necessary. "Tomorrow I have lunch scheduled with an old friend of my mom's. Her name is Jane and she works in IT at the clinic. I ran into her one day while I was visiting Kedron. It's kind of a long story, but her Dad broke his hip, and now her husband has been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. Sad, but hopefully they can help him. Time will tell I guess."

"I'm sorry to hear that. Do you know the husband?" Wam asked.

"Not well. I remember when my parents were alive, they used to join us for barbecues and such fairly regularly. Jane and Mom were close. Supposedly Jane had cancer in her twenties that my mom supported her through. So when she saw me, she was excited and said we should get together and catch up. So I made a lunch date with her."

"That's wonderful. Someone your age needs friends Lee. Good for you," he said in support of my lunch date with Jane.

"After my parents passed, all Kedron and I did was work to make ends meet. There wasn't time or money for fun, so I'm hoping to find a way to work friends and fun into my life. Of course a lot of that will depend upon what Kedron decides after he is discharged," I explained.

"I was serious when I said Kedron could take my room, so he would have his own bathroom. I'd like it if you stayed here. It wouldn't take much change to make it completely accessible," Wam offered.

"Wam, you are already in trouble with Dr. Adams for helping me. I could never ask you to do that for us. No, I need to look for an accessible apartment for Kedron and me. Of course I also need a job to help pay for that apartment. With my lack of skills, that likely won't be easy," I admitted as I took my last bite of food.

"I could help put in a good word for you if you want to try for a job at the clinic or hospital. Also, you mentioned dreaming of going to college, did you change your mind?" He asked. I glanced at Wam and he had a very intense expression on his face.

"The reality is that I cannot afford to go to college. That's why I didn't go after high school. It wouldn't have been fair for Kedron to work and pay all the bills. At least now he should have some money

coming in, since his disability was approved. I know it won't be much, but we will make do. We always do."

"I'm hoping that Hal will go home early this week. Thank goodness he is doing better," Wam voiced.

I picked up the cup of coffee sitting on the tray and took a long whiff of the aroma before drinking half the cup. "Mmm, thank you for the coffee and the breakfast."

Wam smiled and set his now empty plate back on the tray before grabbing his own cup. "I'm a coffee fiend, so I know how important a good cup or five is in the morning." He laughed.

I couldn't help but laugh in return and almost snorted coffee out my nose, "five cups? That's a bit much even for me."

"I might be exaggerating just a tad," he joked.

"I'd never sleep if I drank five cups of coffee in one day," I added. I got up, slipped on a robe, and took the tray in my hands. "You made breakfast, I'll clean up."

"That's a deal I can't turn down," he replied with a smile as he relaxed back against the headboard.

Wam looked so handsome with his hair mussed up and comfortable clothes on that I couldn't resist kissing his lips before I headed into the kitchen to unload the tray and wash up after breakfast.

When I was finished, I saw Wam had his laptop in his lap on the couch and seemed deep in thought. "I'm going to go shower and get dressed. I'll be back shortly," I offered as I went up to my room and gathered my clothing for my shower.
