Chapter 64 - Chapter 62: Slight Signs of Evolution

As Hakai blew past a building, he noticed the two figures fuse, and their bodies mutate to become one.

"There it is!" He told himself, feeling his physical energy rise.

Bam!

He leaped toward the spirit, immediately slicing both its conjoined heads off.

"Huh?" He landed on the other side- shocked to see how quickly he disposed of two low-ranking spirits.

"They must've been F-rank phantoms on the new system, and I quickly took 'em down?" He murmured, looking back at the spirit's body while it fused and began regenerating a single head.

"Hmm?" He stood up, thinking about letting the spirit have another chance as it presumably just bumped up a grade. "No, I don't have the time." He reminded himself, sheathing his katana and walking away.

"Evil spirits of darkness, created to destroy, vanish." Hakai chanted as a spell circle, and above it, a wheel of divine writing appeared, reducing the phantom to thin air.

"This one was an old type, and it posed no threat. I didn't even shed sweat in this new vessel." Then, as his sense spiked, he looked into his palm, picking up on an object harboring massive negativity falling from the sky.

Zap!

"This feeling is equivalent to the old system's B grade!" He shouted as he leaped backward, avoiding the crashing figure.

Boom!

The figure split the ground underneath its feet. The concrete cracked to Hakai's feet.

"Uhh?" The mysterious, broad figure sounded hidden in the dust while its head slowly moved over to face Hakai.

"Uwahhh!" The figure shouted, shooting out of the dust and hurling its fanged arms at Hakai. Hakai was unsure if he could face this thing with only his physical energy, leaping backward and away to avoid the attack.

"What a tremendous amount of energy!" He told himself, unsheathing his sword and slashing upwards from the cover. Finally, he managed to cut off the arms of the now revealed phantom. In front of him stood a bat-like creature, perhaps an unintelligent spirit. As he sensed no human core, it spread its wings and took flight. Somehow and somehow, it understood that it needed to be far away to heal efficiently and remain in battle.

"Huh? I'm certain this one's an old type. So, why does it get away from me while healing?" Hakai's face displayed utter confusion as he leaped to the side of a building on his right. Then, he kicked himself towards the bat phantom, using the wall as leverage.

Hakai flew up towards the spirit while an old memory with Shinka, the first encounter with the New Type, formed in his mind. "Shinka? Was he right?" Hakai uttered, remembering his words.

{Flashback}

The sharp point of his blade-like arm slashed against Hakai's cheek. Barely managing to dodge the blade, he knew that this fight would yield a different result than the rest. "This one can speak?" He asked himself in a daze while throwing himself back and away from the spirit that landed in his previous spot.

"How can you speak?" He asked the spirit with anger in his voice.

"Evolution!" Shinka replied with confidence.

{End of Flashback.}

The spirit's roar was high-pitched, and sound waves formed from its mouth, forcing Hakai back down to the ground with strength.

Boom!

His back crashed against the sidewalk, breaking it in half.

"Unique ability? He can produce high-pitched sound waves by screaming?" Hakai barely managed to get his vision back, quickly noticing the spirit-fanged nail by his eyes.

Shkeen!

He avoided the nail by teleporting behind the bat phantom.

"That was close." He commented while also wondering about what grade and rank system. This spirit fell into the new system.

"This one has to be up there," Hakai told himself, worried it was still hiding a few attributes. "It seems to harbor some intelligence, or it wouldn't fly away to heal."

Shkeen!

Hakai teleported behind the phantom, trying to wound it by slashing behind the neck fatally. However, the spirit placed its bat wings behind its neck in the nick of time, protecting it from being sliced off. Blood gushed from the small neck wound as the wings were sliced off and fell to the ground. The bat's immediate response was to face Hakai and let out another high-pitched scream attack. This time, instead of simple shockwaves, it let out a beat rhythm like a scream, and with every cry, spikes of sound shot out its mouth in the shapes of icicles, with sharp points stabbing Hakai two times in his left leg and one time in his right shoulder.

"Ugh, what is this?" He asked himself while dodging two soundwave shots and blocking three with his katana.

Shkeen!

Shkeen!

Shkeen!

Hakai first appeared behind the bat, then to its left, and lastly, right. Hakai tried to throw it off guard and have the bat misinterpret his next move. Yet, the spirit flew up and stared Hakai down.

'Ehh?" Hakai looked confused, holding his katana; he had enough of wasting time but had no way to see a way out of this without using the extra amp from the positive energy flow.

"The curse's about faded, but I just can't see a reason to use it yet." He told himself while still holding back a little against this mysterious foe. His heart needed to learn more about its unique intelligence, and his mind wanted to rid of it as soon as possible and get to his first destination.

The bat phantom seemed ready to launch another attack, so Hakai flowed an amount of energy to his right eye. Using his visual prowess came in haft, but this was the best way to escape speeds he still could not conquer with only his physical energy. The visual prowess, dubbed Path of Sight, Physical Teleportation, is a unique graphical prowess that comes with the Eyes of Eight Paths. "Hah, my physical energy is still ways to go till I hit empty, but I don't want to rely on it heavily." The spirit opened its mouth and instantly let out a big scream.

The attack it launched was different from the other two. This one pinned Hakai against the ground as if the consecutive soundwaves acted like a gravitational force, but it quadrupled the normal gravity on earth.

"Damn, a consecutive scream to pin me down." He thought as the bat closed its mouth and flew down with its feet wide open and fangs aimed at his head.

"Move! Got to move!" He told himself as he opened his rested eye and, in an instant, appeared beside the spirit, slicing off its head clean from the neck, and the momentum carried the headless body behind him, falling to the ground.

He landed on his left knee behind the spirit as it immediately and automatically began regenerating. His sword was across from his face. As he planted his mouth into the crease of his elbow, he enchanted the expelling spell.

"Evil spirits of darkness, created to destroy, vanish." Hakai chanted as a spell circle. Above it, a wheel of divine writing appeared, reducing the phantom slowly to thin air. Indicating that the spell was weaker against more vigorous opponents. "I've to learn a new expelling spell—one stronger than this."

Finally marking the end of the fight, he looked up to stand and noticed a dark-shady figure inside a dark alleyway—watching as if observing for future purposes.

"Who is that?" Hakai uttered, bringing his katana in front and tightly gripping it.
