Somewhere, sometime, we were out on the plains just outside the city.
The wind swept through, making my long pink hair dance, ruffling my magenta denim overalls and pink-striped shirt. Across from me stood the man who had been with me for my entire journey.
We were down to our last Pokémon. My Chansey faced off against his Dragonite.
"Dragonite! Show them what you've got!" he commanded, his black hair ruffled by the wind. He wore a red open jacket over a black shirt, with black leather pants that matched his serious expression. His Dragonite—a large, orange dragon with a round snout, long antennae, and a small horn—focused its intense green eyes on us. Its gaze hardened as its eyes began to glow white, and a cream-colored orb started forming in front of its mouth. Hyper Beam. If Chansey took a direct hit, this could be over.
Thinking fast, I gave my order. "Chansey, use Protect now!"
Chansey raised her hands, her body flashing white just in time. The powerful beam shot out, slamming against her shield, but she stood unfazed as the beam dissipated. Dragonite, exhausted from using Hyper Beam, was panting heavily.
It was my chance. "Chansey, now!"
My Chansey's mouth sparkled as she gathered energy for the next move, waiting for my command. I smiled, feeling the anticipation rise. "Use Blizzard!"
She released a fierce blizzard straight at Dragonite, engulfing it in a flurry of snow and ice. When the air finally cleared, Dragonite stood frozen in place.
"We won!" I yelled, jumping up in joy.
"Chansey!" Chansey cheered, joining me, her smile as wide as mine.
My opponent laughed, shaking his head. "That's one tough—and kinda weird—Chansey you have."
"Ehh?" I tilted my head, surprised.
"Who uses Chansey offensively?" he teased, reaching for his Pokéball to retrieve his frozen Dragonite.
I waved my hands. "No need! I'll heal your Pokémon. We've been traveling together so long, and you always forget that!"
He just shrugged, which I found slightly annoying but forgave quickly. We'd been through too much for me to take it personally. I rummaged through my bag, pulling out potions, revives, and Ice Heals to restore both of our Pokémon to full health.
This was our final battle as allies, a test of each other's strength.
I still remember our first encounter back in Pallet Town, where I was trying to escape the path everyone expected me to take: becoming a Pokémon Nurse.
But here we were at the end of my journey through Kanto.
So let's take a look back at where it all began, and how it's brought us here.
My name is Joytrice Orquiza. I'm not a future Pokémon Nurse—I'm a future Pokémon Master. And this is the start of my journey.
Come with me on this adventure!
With… My Own Way of Joy!
"Chansey, Chan!"
