Meeting after meeting, conversation after conversation. Rehashing the same issues and concerns. Questions were answered, and then answers were questioned. And the morning became afternoon, and the afternoon shifted into evening before Mae found her way back home, landing face down on her couch.
"That tough of a day?" Baas questioned as he made his way into the living room and sat down next to her, gently rubbing at her back.
With a groan, Mae rolled onto her side and looked up at him. "I enjoyed breakfast with Jasper, and then everything went downhill from there. I hate that life has gotten so complicated. We just got answers and instead of an end and justice being served…" Sitting up, Mae wrapped herself around Baas, hugging him tight. "Don't do it. Don't risk yourself."
"I can't return to the Quarter," he whispered his reply, and she felt the strength in his arms as he pulled her closer.
