As the door was thrown open before them, Mae held tight to Baas' hand. Regardless of who answered, she knew this was going to be difficult and awkward for him. He wasn't the easiest going around others as it was. It took time for him to warm up to strangers, and this was his family. She could sense his tension and knew his defensive walls, that were as thick as her own, were up and when she felt his grip returned, she knew they were on high alert.
"You came." The words were faint but audible, coming from the woman standing in the doorway.
She was the same woman Mae had seen in the restaurant, the one that Baas had spoken to. Her black hair was streaked with a soft blue, and her eyes a gentle orange, were so wide as to see the whites.
"Hello, Mother," Baas said as she reached towards him with hesitant, shaking fingers.
"Fen," she whispered, and Mae took a step aside as Baas grabbed hold of his mother and pulled her in.
