Chereads / District 42 / Chapter 29 - The Main Laboratory part 1

Chapter 29 - The Main Laboratory part 1

Casper woke up around six am.

Now that he was used to the timezone of the District, he did not need an alarm to wake up every day.

He was quite used to the very well-made artificial sunlight from the Castle's lights.

No wonder since they imitated perfectly even the intensity and color that the sun would be in different parts of the day.

Casper stood up as soon as his eyes opened. As a matter of habit, he looked through his apartment, for every room it had. It was a way he found to keep aware that everything there was real, that nothing changed, and that that world was far from being a dream.

He needed to have that type of realization after he woke up, to don't get driven crazy.

Even after one whole month in that world, it was hard to absorb everything, and he had always this feeling of uneasiness, as though he could wake up at any time and realize that that whole year in the army may have worn out him too much.

However, the time when he woke up again never came, and he was not concerned at all. As said before, Casper did not have anything much attaching him to his original world. And, as the practical person that he naturally was, he preferred to bear that situation and solve things there first. After this, he could think of anything else he wanted.

When Casper finished looking inside every room in his apartment (which did not last for too long, since it was very small, to begin with), he headed to the bathroom and took a quick cold bath.

He had the bad habit of sleep on the sofa, which even he did not know why, since the beds of that world were made specifically for the sake of sleep quality and had a lot of health benefits.

Casper could blame the television or videogame because of that bad habit, but in that new world, or at least in District 42, these types of art and entertainment seemed to be very undervalued. They had not improved much in this area. People had their own ways to enjoy themselves, but it was just a few ones.

Besides all those useless, but curious things that Casper had discovered, he also could get vital information through his daily routine.

The White warrior wore the pure white coat that the people from the laboratory gave to him, along with some common pants and boots.

After having his breakfast, Casper would wait for his coworker to arrive at his apartment to guide him to the laboratory.

People still thought that Casper did not know how to use the Teleporting pads, so they required someone to go catch him at home.

Hopefully, nobody was obliged, since he gets along well with a guy called Adam, who offered to be the one to pick him up.

Adam was a small man, around the same age as Casper. He appeared to be always exhausted and sleepy. His speech was always at a slow pace, but he never faltered at his words.

He was a so smart guy, that Casper had to wonder how much smarter he would get in a day when he was not asleep.

Actually, it was an urban legend of the laboratory: the day when Adam wouldn't be sleepy.

The day would never come, though. He was indeed a hell of a guy, he was always working his ass off.

The two friends meet each other in front of the building and headed to the laboratory together.

"Good morning, Casper. It's nice to see you today." That morning he seemed even more slow-paced than the other days.

"What time did you go to bed yesterday or today?"

Adam kept walking for a while until he realized that the question was for him. He looked slowly at Casper.

"I am two days without sleep, except for a little nap…" He sighed.

"Wow, man… You need to keep calm and progress little by little, why rush things now?"

"I had a realization a time ago…" He said, and that was one of the few times that Casper saw Adam being so cheerful.

"And what's it? Tell me, so once we get into the lab I can help you a little."

"Y'know, I was thinking in a bunch of discs…"

"Hm?" Casper got a bit confused.

"Since the multiverse is already a matter of fact, we just need to sort out how it is disposed. And I think they are one on top of another, like discs… Or pancakes, but floating…

"But, the transmigration to each universe would need a little gap inside it, that is filled with some sort of vacuum, which would turn the traveling something possible."

The White warrior was doing his best to keep up with the explanation. He was not that layman when it comes to science, but he still needed to process everything little by little.

"So, I thought, since these spaces would be hypothetically empty, why we couldn't build something there?"

Casper thought a bit about it and came to the same conclusion.

"So, are you saying that your theory is correct? Actually, it's possible to build up a universe?" Casper's eyes widened.

"If it is very small, we can… possibly."

"Haha! You are the man, Adam! You are a genius! Let's go to that freaking lab and start to work."

They headed excitedly to the nearest Teleporting pad.

Because of the Teleporting pads, Casper felt very sedentary all that month along.

As long as a Teleporting pad would be available, you just needed to say the right coordinates and then you would appear wherever you wanted.

After getting teleported, Casper and Adam got inside the laboratory.

The laboratory was a huge construction. There were more of them, but that was the main one.

Inside there, were different sections destined for all sorts of researches. Each laboratory had its specialization, even if it was not supposed to. Also, among the four laboratories, there was sort of a rivalry and mutual competition to which one would make more progress over the years.

The Main Lab was specialized in robotics, industrial mechanics, motoring, and so on.

In short, they constructed a lot of different types of machinery or robots that would make a lot of crazy things.

The Second Lab was more specialized in drugs, medicines, testament and therapy methods, and biology.

It was not hard to guess what they did.

The Third Lab was specialized in the construction of Belic power. Currently, was the most prestigious of the four laboratories.

Everything that had the potential to kill, would be researched and created by them. They would also always peek at the other buildings' inventions and discoveries to see if they could turn something into a weapon.

That was a point that Casper noted. Along the month, he had always keep looking at that laboratory.

He knew that the District was in the middle of a Civil war but a huge laboratory just to make more weapons to restraint some civilians and rebels? It was very strange.

The Fourth Lab was specialized in all sorts of tools and conveniences that could turn their lives easier than it was.

They always looked to essential or hard works to make them even more practical.

It was the less competitive of the four but always came with something simple, new, and useful.

Sometimes, the laboratories would collaborate to make a researching group for something specific. But they avoided it the most and just went to do it when absolutely necessary since it was a huge legal fight to get the invention or discovery patent.

Casper was working in the Main Lab because he was well acknowledged with Mechanical and automotive engineering. He was not a specialist, but that month working in the laboratory served as the better school he could ever have.

Another reason was to discover what type of phenomenon made him travel from his dimension to there. Also, he wanted to know if it was naturally possible, or if someone did it to him.

He was specifically in a section of the laboratory that was working on particle transmigration and multiverse interaction.

The main goal was to discover how to made particles transmigrate through different universes and dimensions.

What Adam was trying to do was to discover if they had something between the gaps of each universe to the particles travel.

He was trying to discover it construing his own little universe, which would be also a testing ground for sending particles.

Yes, he was playing god… and Casper loved his craziness.

When they arrived at their section, which was a huge block inside the building with lots of computers, machine parts, and all sorts of tools; Adam went ahead to the prototype they were working on.

It was sort of a round metal stove with lots of technological stuff composing its structure and all sorts of power cables connected.

"Hmpf, as always he never says at least a good morning for us." A woman wearing a white coat just as Casper walked next to him.

She was the head of the project, and overall a very famous scientist Jarl. Her name was Katarina.

She had short hair, and if she never talked with Casper once, he would think that she was a man.

Katarina was on Casper's list of people to look up to.

There were a lot of people working on the same section as them, and Casper talked with everyone there, although most of them seemed always concerned or extremely interested in him as an anomaly.

Another reason for Casper to enter the Main Lab instead of the other three was because of that section. If he could get a clue of what happened to him, he would probably find his way there.

After greeting everyone, Casper went to help Adam. Katarina, though, stopped him again.

"I nearly forgot to mention. I got those plans of the laboratories' buildings. Don't ask me how." She lent to him a couple of building plans very detailed.

"I wasn't intending to ask, anyway. Thank you, Katarina."

"You are in debt with me for now, okay?" She winked at him.

"Sure, miss!"

Casper smiled broadly seeing those plans on his hands. The next parts of his routine after work may be interesting…
