"What the…" Casper nearly let it slip out of his mouth, while he read the name of that project: Jormungand.
"That's the project they were working on in the Main Lab. If the files are here, then it means that it's a project in which the patent belongs to the Third Lab… Of course, it's a Belic project… This Jomurgand must be some kind of superweapon…"
He put that file aside, looking at the other papers. One of them caught his attention for some reason as well.
It was a purple folder with a couple of papers inside it. It was pretty thick and had no specific date of start.
He opened that folder very slowly, feeling tension somewhat.
Casper realized that what was written in those papers was not related to a project or something, but an operation: Operation Draugr.
Casper had no idea what it was, and he had the feeling that it was going on a couple of months, if not a whole year.
He started to flip through the papers, reading quickly what was the contempt.
It was something related to the masks, and how they could interact with the human's bodies in general. How far it could go. How much they could… manipulate them.
"It is a pretty delicate and inhuman operation." The person who worked on those reports wrote it down emphatically. "The ones who get involved with it will not just have their hands dirty, or their names undervalued and demoted… No, it's something that belongs to nothing but Hellhein. It's a goal that, to one reach, will need to throw aside his soul.
"For now, it's just an operation… We are still making our way to reach the stage of a definitive ongoing project.
"The masks are still not ready to take part in this plan. They are incomplete. We are some months working on it, but the Forger is in trouble making the right modifications."
Casper heard a loud thud coming from behind and nearly jumped, letting the papers fall over the ground. His heart was in his throat, and he even lost his breath.
"Damn it! That guy is loud as hell! I need to pick up everything before…" Then, he spotted different papers from the others. The write was hand made and it was very badly written as if the person who wrote it was a kid or just a crazy man.
He picked those last couple of papers and started to read again.
"357. That's the number from this month. May they have their eternal glory at Valhalla… if we at least let their souls go there.
"877. This month, it doubled. The number of people volunteering for the operation got all wiped in a blink of an eye. I wonder how far the Jarls would go because of this war.
"1344. We killed all of them. Our own folk. Assassinated in cold blood. They had not even an appropriate funeral.
"Today, I lost the count. May I rest in peace in Valhalla." Then, a lot of dry blood staining all over the paper.
Casper gulped, feeling that bile spread in his mouth.
"What the hell with all of this?"
He got some more actual reports, rummaging the papers spread on the ground hastily while he kneeled.
He started to read everything at once, with cold sweat on his forehead and his hands trembling.
"I am the new scientist who will report the progression with the Operation Draugr due to complications with the other scientist taking care of it.
"Today a couple more guinea pigs came. Apparently, if the death is beyond the limit of 24 hours, then everything just won't work. The human brain is still a mystery, so we can't know why they can't receive the neutral waves that the masks are supposed to send.
"Some patients started to give some reaction, but the progression is going at a slow pace since it is very difficult to obtain the resources needed for the tests.
"The Forger is in an eternal delay to fix the problems he must fix. It is delaying our project as well.
"The guinea pigs 00334 and 00333 are giving good responses. It's a pity that tomorrow they will not be of any use.
"The next Operation Draugr this month will happen at the midwest region. I am excited to obtain the new guinea pigs."
Casper widened his eyes, nearly shouting, perplexed.
He was willing to read more about those papers, but he could hear the last cabinet shut and then footsteps.
He organized quickly the papers as he could. Then started to put the folds in their places.
He just took a look at the name of one more project: Svartalfar, creating black elves.
It was the only project with a subtitle and was not that recent, it had some months ongoing.
"I wonder what's a Svartalfar, and particularly, what the hell is a Draugr!?"
Even though he had a lot of questions about those intricating files, he could not just stay there as much as he pleased. It was just the first part of the infiltration and he could not get caught by any means.
Casper closed the cabinet and made sure it was locked properly.
He ran hastily towards the exit door of the attachment.
Out there, he found that the scientist was looking everywhere, trying to find him. Casper let him walk around dumbfounded for a while before appear walking calmly towards him as if he just got out of some of the blocks.
"Ah! There you are. So, we have these blueprints here, it will serve for your research?"
"Sure thing! Thank you very much. I must be going right now before they kill me. You know how it is."
"Hehe, yeah, I am very well acquaintanced with this sort of thing. Take care, Siegfried."
"Okay! Same here!" Casper waved at him and then started to walk out of that local.
He tried as hard as he could to make a calm and polite voice. But, inside the mask, Casper was with a darkened expression and pensive, yet disturbing eyes.
"Ok, now look, soldier. You need to cool yourself down. It's an infiltration you are doing here, you can't act if your head isn't at 110%, understood?" His response came after he was able to control his breath. Soon, his heart stopped beating so fast in his chest.
He vanished everything that would get in his way there: that feeling of betrayal, rage, and sadness. He kept everything, trying to not think much at those points.
He had the information, nobody could steal it from him; there was no need to sweat it at that moment.
After calming himself down, he walked through the corridors once again.
When he realized, he was already way more deeply into the complex, and walking through lots of different sections and researching groups.
He used the same excuse he had before to enter into that sections and get some more knowledge. It was not difficult at all.
He passed through researching groups that were working on tactical missiles, combat vehicles, robots, and all sorts of things that could possibly be a weapon.
One of that sections was working on a missile called Mjonir. Apparently, it had the potential to vanish all District 42 in a matter of seconds.
It was basically an electron bomb. Those tiny particles would spread out through a region and make it have a sudden and mortal bunch of bolts and explosions due to collision of positive and negative energy, as in a bolt of lightning.
It would sure be like a judgment of Thor.
They were working as well in a weapon called Gungnir which Casper heard before. Seeing the prototype, he was not sure if it was a spear, but it seemed very powerful.
He also passed through a section that was researching different drugs and solutions that could be used in battle. There were three drugs there: Odin, which seemed to be the oil that Sionnach used before, which had highly healing properties; Berseker, a drug that numbed the sense of pain and increased the level of adrenaline and willingness to battle in the individual. It was like a Fight or Flight effect, but doubled, and without the Flight part; the last one was called Loki. It was poison. They did not explain to Casper what it did exactly, but they briefly described it as "Excruciating… if it is just a single drop".
Casper decided to not approach too much that poison…
After visiting all those locals and try to gather as much information as he could, Casper was finally arriving at the lowest parts of the complex.
Although it would be dangerous to keep going further in there, and that the deeper he entered, the more difficult it was to go out, Casper could not back there anymore.
He just hoped that he would not get lost there.
At some point, he found another elevator. That was the signal that he arrived where the juicy parts of all that mystery would possibly be.
He walked a bit nervous and pressed the button. The elevator came.
"I am not a religious person, but… May Odin help me down there…" He stepped in, and the door closed behind him.
