Chapter 36 - Escape

"They already have full control over this village. Whatever happens in here comes to their hearing first" Droos continued

Freya could almost feel goosebumps rising on her skin. Luckily she had chosen to disguise herself properly while she was in the village.

"It's almost impossible to escape here, but incase you do try to get as far away as possible. The soldiers won't chase you into the open. They can't risk raising suspicion within the village.

Only a few will go, a few of the very skillful soldiers. And from what I've heard, they are fast, precise and good at hunting prey. *cough* *cough*

Droos hand went limp and fell to his sides and his breath ceased.

"Bless your soul" Freya huffed and closed his eyelids with two of her fingers. There was no time to waste. She had to get away from here.

"Creak" the door knob turned and the door began swinging in

"Shit" Freya hissed under her breath, it seemed as if time slowed. In the split second before the door could completely open. Freya grabbed her bag and dove behind the door as stealthily as possible.

A gruff looking soldier sauntered into the room "dead at last" he spat.

"What is this" he spoke as if asking the dead body on the bed. Freya mentally face palmed herself, how could she have left that there.

She had forgotten the little flask in a moment of panic, to make sure her stealthiness so far was not compromised.

The soldier had picked the flask up, Freya could tell from his reaction that the flask didn't look familiar.

He turned, most certainly to raise an alarm but before he could complete the 180 degree turn. Freya was immediately upon him, silent and quick, like a messenger of death, she stuck a dagger in his windpipe before any sound could escape his throat

The helpless soldier eyes gaping and throat gurgling slid to the floor, Freya grabbed him and helped him to the floor.

Without wasting time, she grabbed the flask and carefully stepped over the blood and silently closed the door behind her.

"So much for a stealth mission" Freya hissed, she walked briskly but quietly down the hallway, the same way she had come heading for the basement.

She was almost at the door, when two soldiers came out of a room, Freya turned back

"Drab"

She kept walking, then the soldiers started screaming in some foreign language then doors began opening and people with weapons flooded out.

"Drab" Freya cursed as an arrow whizzed past her ear and struck the door in her front.

She got to the door just as it started raining arrows, without waiting to see if the door had a lock, she smashed it close and started flying up the ladder.

Freya could see arrow heads sticking out the wooden door in the basement, in the blink of an eye.

She was at the top of the ladder, she turned the handle on the trap door and heaved, but the door wouldn't budge, she heaved again but the same result.

She could hear the footsteps outside the basement door getting closer quickly. She punched the door frantically but it still didn't budge.

In an attempt to grab her knife, her sling bag almost fell off her shoulder, she quickly grabbed it mid air and drove her knife into the latch. Just as the trap door unlocked, the basement door broke in.

Freya jumped out just as the soldiers clambered up the stairs, she slammed the trap door shut and moved the table over it and quickly flew out of the house.

As she retreated from the building, she could hear the sounds of pounding on the steel trap door.

Freya didn't bother looking back, she knew they would have a hard time opening the door.

She ran through the village, avoiding places where there were a lot of people moving around, she was having slight difficulties moving with the garment around her but she had to leave it on as she was in public.

Freya headed straight for the outskirts of the village not giving even the slightest thought to the inn she had lodged in the previous night, the things she had left there were discard able.

She certainly won't need them on this journey. There was no sign of pursuers so Freya decided to walk to regain some energy.

But Droos words rang in her ear "few of the very skilled soldiers, fast and precise, good at hunting prey"

She was prey?

She had to put as much distance as possible between her and her supposed pursuers before night fell.

The sun was just disappearing when Freya got to the edge of the forest, she had discarded the clothes she wore and her shawl somewhere in the village to throw her pursuers off her trail.

She hadn't seen her assailants but she had to assume they were out there

"Isn't that crazy" she asked herself

"What if Droos was wrong" she thought "But there's no way he would like with his dying breath" she had seen it in his eyes, he was telling the truth.

Not like he had any reason to lie, and if he meant every word he said then she had to put enough distance between herself and them.

"A few" he had said. She had no idea how much he had meant by a few.

For all she cared, it could be an army of five or more

Well if they were five, they would have to split to cover more ground and she wasn't exactly an adorable kitten.

Five men shouldn't be too much for her to handle.

There was a reason she was the Eagle eyed ghost, the deadliest Archer of the seven.

It would take more than one man to take her in.

And if they had to split up to cover more ground, it would be quite easier for her to handle them, or so she thought
