The trio stared at one another and then back at the trap door. The question on their minds was not if they should go but how they would handle whatever awaited them.
Jake was the first to squat, he ran his fingers along the edges of the door then he pulled the string that was attached to the door knob.
The string came up with ease, and a small knob popped out. Jake twisted the knob and pulled the door open.
A shiny ladder rung stared at him as the light reflected off the clean metal.
"The things in the house might not have been used but this ladder clearly has been" Jake commented.
It was a long way down from the top of the ladder but Jake already had a firm resolve and he was ready to face whatever they would see at the bottom of the stairs.
Jake held the top rung of the ladder and let himself down, Anna followed closely behind him and Levi brought up the rear and slowly they went down the ladder.
