Stepping back a bit, he recomposed himself. He understood what was happening, but for some reason, he wished it was different. Miki was well, beautiful. She was the school director's daughter, she was also intelligent and popular. It really didn't take much for anybody to fall in love with her.
With that being said, there was always something that bothered him.
"Hey, Miki."
Calling out to her seemed to snap her out of her trance. She stared quizzically at him, waiting for him to continue.
"Why...do you like me?" he asked, his eyes gazing seriously at her.
The question took her by surprise, judging by the sudden jerk of her head. She thought about the question for a few moments before simply stating, "Simple, you were the first one that let me cling to you!"
(Ah...) He wanted to get out of there. He wasn't hurt or anything, he just didn't feel like it was worth spending more time with her. Reverting back to his usual expression, he stood up and turned to leave.
"...Hm? Where are you going, dear?"
"Home."
"...Why? We're gonna go on our date, remember?" she asked, running over to his side. "You're not running away, are you?" Her tone was...different, almost sounded like a threat.
Glancing over to her, her eyes were completely focused on his face. Her gaze at him was frightening, her eyes were almost unmoving as she just stared at him.
He could feel a slight shiver run down his spine as he thought of running away. Not that that would do anything, they were still classmates after all. She'd probably just act as if nothing happened the next day.
Recalling the events from earlier, he asked, "Where's your date from earlier?"
Playfully putting a finger on her chin, she answered, "I've asked him to go home."
Looking over to his sides, he realized that the boy was nowhere to be found. He had other questions he wanted to ask but for now, he just wanted to rest. Not that that was possible since Miki was practically breathing down his neck.
She was almost like a puppy with how she watched over him—it was more like she was a starving wolf to him though. Her gaze was completely focused, only temporarily breaking away to make sure she wouldn't bump into anybody. To anybody who saw this, they'd probably assume she was a little sister or a clingy girlfriend. While the latter was somewhat accurate, it was very much an understatement.
"Ciel, I'm a bit hungry."
He cocked his head to the side in response. "You didn't eat with your date?"
"Can you please stop referring to him as a 'date'? You're my date..."
"Huh? I don't... Whatever," he replied with a sigh. "But anyway, I've already—" He then jerked back a bit. Telling her that he already ate with Fuki was definitely not a good idea. Even though he held himself back, his sudden movement didn't go unnoticed.
"You already...?"
He dismissively waved his hands. "Nothing, nothing. Do you have a place where you wanna go?"
She gave a small nod. "Yes, actually. I've been frequenting this coffee shop as of recently." She then led him towards a familiar-looking street and into a very familiar-looking building.
It was the exact same building he was just at with Fuki. Glancing up the door, he noted that the shop's name was "A Sweet Place". Grabbing his wrist, she forcefully dragged him inside the establishment. No mistaking it, this was definitely the same shop.
The couple at the counter turned to greet them but quickly changed their expression to that of confusion. Ciel could tell they wanted to ask why he was back so fast, with another girl no less. The woman gave them a less than happy face as she took their orders.
Seeing as he already ate, he just ordered some coffee. He didn't bother to listen to what Miki ordered.
Sitting down at the nearest free table, the two sat across from each other, much to Miki's disappointment.
"Not going to sit next to me?" she asked as she patted the spot beside her.
With a quick scowl, he replied, "No."
She was very disappointed at his response, so much so that she glared at him again. She's done this multiple times already but he still wasn't used to it. Just the way she stared was unnerving, it felt like he was staring at the eyes of Medusa.
But not long after, their orders came in.
Sipping from his cup of coffee, he saw two pancakes stacked on top of each other with what looked like honey on it. Cutting a piece, she blew on the hot honey-covered pancake and placed it in her mouth.
A small appreciative smile formed on her face as she savored every bite of the food. After a quick swallow, she pointed her fork at Ciel.
"Would you like a bite?"
"...Yeah, sure."
(What's happening, exactly? Earlier I felt like running and now...I just feel like I'm eating with a friend,) he thought as he cautiously took a bite. It tasted as any normal pancake would, the honey was quite good though.
While chewing, he noticed that Miki happily looked at him. He really couldn't get a grip of what she was thinking. Even after he swallowed, she just kept staring for a few more moments before resuming to eat.
It went on without much really happening. She just happily ate her food while Ciel tried to distract himself by staring at the window to his side.
As she finished her food, she gulped down her tea and ordered another, but not before standing up and sitting next to him. She did it so quickly that he didn't even have time to protest. With her now blocking his way out, he gazed at the window once more, trying not to focus on his date.
He didn't even have to look to know that she was staring at him.
"You know, Ciel, this isn't much of a date, is it?" she softly asked.
He narrowed his eyes then turned to look at her. Surprisingly, she wasn't actually looking at him, she instead had her gaze towards the couple manning the counter. He couldn't tell her exact expression, but he could have sworn she had a tint of wistfulness in her eyes.
"I often wonder if I'll ever have a husband." The statement was sudden, but it didn't stop him from thinking about it as well—a wife for him, of course.
Looking at the married couple, he noticed that the old man had back problems but continued to do all of the work, trying to calm the shaky hands of his wife.
"Hm..."
"Ciel?"
"Married, huh..." Ciel seemed to be in his own world. He couldn't exactly describe why, but just looking at them made him want to do better. The old couple was still doing what they loved despite their age, and that was commendable—really, that would be commendable for anybody.
The sounds from Miki sipping her tea snapped him out of his thoughts.
She had this smirk to her, one that showed confidence. He was a bit hesitant to ask why.
"...What's up?"
She put a finger to her mouth and replied, "Nothing."
After that small exchange, she finished her tea and they went on their merry way—well, Miki was merry.
It was already late in the afternoon, the sun was beginning to set at this point. With a small smile, she turned towards him and asked, "Would you like to watch the sunset?"
He nodded weakly. She then grabbed him by his wrist and dragged him along. She kept dragging him along for about 5 minutes before they made their way inside a fairly tall building.
As they entered, he noticed that the building was actually a bookstore. She rushed to the escalators, with him in hand. They got to the fifth floor and he noticed it had a room to the side. In that room, the left-side wall was made completely out of glass. There were a few people gathered inside the room, some reading books, some just admiring the view.
Letting go of her hold, she sat down on the floor which Ciel followed. With their backs resting against a wall, to their side was quite a sight to behold. They weren't too high up but it was still enough to admire the beauty of the setting sun.
The ever-growing darkness in the sky contrasted perfectly with the shining blaze of orange. He admired the view, not even noticing that Miki had rested her head on his shoulder—which she was more than happy about. The both of them stared at the sun intently, taking in the whole sight.
It took a few moments before the setting sun had completely vanished from view, the orange tint in the sky along with it. Ciel turned his head only for his cheek to slightly bump into Miki's forehead. He lowered his brows, not out of anger but out of empathy.
It was moments like these that he thought maybe his girlfriend was just like any other girl. But he quickly threw that idea out the window; she's not normal, she's anything but that, actually. He knew that and yet, he couldn't help but think why. Why wasn't she normal?
Obviously, he didn't know the answer to that question.
He shifted himself as he pulled her head closer.
(I don't mind moments like these...)
He still had many lingering questions. Things like why did she go on a different date with someone, why is she so obsessed with him, and why does she refuse to acknowledge the boy from earlier as her date. But the question he wanted an answer to the most was if she was being serious about her reasoning for liking him.
She said that she only liked him because he let her cling to him, but he knew for a fact that that's wrong. Multiple boys have already asked her out, all of them were rejected. But this time, she was the one that asked him out.
"Whatever..." he said to end his thoughts. He then rested his head on top of hers.
Their relationship wasn't normal, and he thoroughly believed it definitely wouldn't be normal anytime soon or maybe even ever. Maybe it'll be a toxic relationship, maybe it'll be a healthy one, he didn't know. Nobody did. Only time would be able to truly tell.
