"Katy! What happened to you?" I tried to yell but it came out as a whisper. Her left eye was swollen shut, her lip was broken, and half of her face is bruised. It was obvious she had gotten beaten. Was it because she helped me? Was it because she tried bringing me food? I tried picking myself up to get to her but I had no strength left.
"Please don't stay there you are weak, here you have to eat something. Don't worry about me I'll be fine." Katie said as she saw me struggling to get up. She tried pretending she was fine but I could tell from the tone of her voice that she wasn't.
I took a drink of the water to help ease the burning in my throat and the spoke again. "Katy you can talk to me, let me help you, are you okay?" I ask her trying to sound friendly and appealing in some way. I was surprised when her façade quickly dropped and she began to cry. Oh, shit did I do that. "He hit me. He had never done that before." She sobbed.
"What? Why?" I asked and she shrugs her shoulders. "I don't know he had never done that before. For the past few weeks, he has been acting different as if he doesn't love me anymore. Ever since that man showed up, he has changed, he has been cold and distant as now he is more aggressive." She spoke in a low voice.
"Katy, I need to tell you something. I- I went on a date with him. That night he brought me here I went on a date with him I am sorry I didn't know he had a girlfriend." I had to come clean for some reason I felt guilty. "I know Marie he told me."
"Katy why are you with him?" I asked. I really wondered why a nice girl like her ended up with a sick asshole as Randy. "I guess the same reason you are carrying Shadow Cats child. I love him Marie I really do." I only nodded at her response. I understood, I understood clearly. She is so right we are basically the same, we are in love with criminals.
"Do you know who the man is?" I asked. She shook her head "I don't know him; I had never seen him before but I heard him say that we are both nothing but trouble and we should both be dead. That we are a distraction to both Randy and Shadow Cat. That's when I confronted him and he put his hands on me. I figured if we are both going to die, we could at least die as friends." Katy was obviously going mad.
"Hey you are not going to die. Randy would not kill you just like Shadow Cat would never kill me. You know Shadow did things to me too but he wasn't in control. He loves me and Randy loves you he wouldn't kill you don't worry you are safe." I spoke trying to make her feel better but my own words were like knifes at my heart. Yeah, I am sure she will live, but will I?
Before I knew it, tears were running down my cheeks again. I really don't want to die. I had an opportunity to be a mother but now I probably never will. "Marie, are you okay?" Katy asked worried. I begin to think to myself. Am I okay? No of course not. Shadow Cat probably hates me for what I wrote him, I most likely die here. How can I save my child unless...?
"Umm Katy?" I tried to get her complete attention. "Yes" she answers as I take a bite of my sandwich trying to make it look like a casual conversation. "Well, we both know that Randy is going to kill me so I-" before I could finish, she interrupted me. "No, he won't kill you. I won't let him I pr-" this time it was me who decided to cut her short I already knew what she was about to say and I don't want her to feel guilty later for not being able to keep that promise.
"Katy, you know you won't be able to stop him. To him this seems personal, he hates Shadow and from the looks of it me as well. You won't be able to stop him and I don't want you to. In fact, stay away, after you leave her don't come back till it's all said and done. I don't want you to get hurt because of me. This is not your fight and you need to live."
I could tell she knew there was truth behind my words since she remained silent and looked towards the ground. I took another bit of my sandwich as I tried to find the right words to ask of her what I really needed. "Look Katy, I don't know you but after all you have done for me I truly believe I can trust you. So I am going to ask you a favor. It's a hard one but I wouldn't ask if I didn't think you could handle it."
"Anything" She replied. I gave her a weak smile before taking a deep breath and proceeding to ask my favor. "Like I said we both know he will kill me soon, and when you cleaned my wounds I could tell you had some medical experience am I correct?" "Yes, Randy made me study so I could help them." Once again I gave her a weak smile and nodded. I knew that my plan was a bit crazy, and to be honest I wish it doesn't get that far. I don't want to die; I want to be a mother but I know that might not happen.
"Great, so when the time comes, please save my baby. Take care of him or her until you can get ahold of my parents. Tell them that I want the baby to meet his father. Tell them I love them and I am leaving the last part of me with them. Please."
As I spoke I held back tears. "Marie" "Please, the baby has done nothing wrong, they deserve to live, please I beg you save my baby take it to my parents, tell them my message, please. You are the only one who can help me. Katy promise me you'll help me." I begged her. At this point I just wanted to find a way for my baby to survive, if I can't live at least the last part of me can, right?
"Please" I whispered again now crying. I could see her heart was broken and she tried to hold back tears as well. Then to my surprise I see her nod and I sigh in relief. "I promise" I can help but pull her in for a hug. I am so grateful to have met her. Now maybe my baby will have a shot. "Thank you."
At that exact moment the door bursts open, and afraid for her life I let her go quickly. There watching us stood Randy and he was not happy. He looked at me with rage then looked at her. "Katy! What the hell are you doing here?" he asked while walking towards us. My heart began to race, if looks could kill I would be dead in seconds.
"What do you think, I told you I had enough, if you are going to kill me anyways then why not?" Katy spoke to him as if she was not afraid but I could see her hands shaking in her back.
"I would never kill you, I told you that already, I made a mistake before and I am sorry I hit you I swear I never meant to but I was just so angry I couldn't control myself. But as for her, things will not change she deserves what's coming to her." He looked at me with disgust as he pointed towards me. "Why? She has nothing to do with what he did to you she is innocent just like I was." "SHE IS NOT INNOCENT" he screamed loudly. I flinched at his tone. All I could think of is what the hell did I do to him?
"Why? What did she do?" She asked not backing down. I honestly don't understand what I did to him. If it's when I kicked him I was trying to escape he had it coming but other than that I don't know what I could have done.
"None of your business, did has nothing to do with you just stay away." "Well I am not so I guess you'll just have to kill me as well." Katy sassed. I looked at her with a pleasing look. I needed her to listen, I needed her to stay alive, and she had to save my baby. I gave her the look that said remember your promise but she wouldn't back out.
"Yeah, well will see about that" Randy replied while grabbing her arm and pulling her out of the room. I was afraid for her life. Randy was so angry. "KATY!" I yelled but she was pushed out of the room. Before Randy came fully out, he turned around and spoke again. "Don't worry I'll be back for you. It's time for round 2."
