Chapter 6 - Comprehension

When Will reopened his eyes, he found himself in the medical room along with plenty of other participants. He felt fresh as anew and reinvigorated after the treatment. Getting up from the infirmary bed, he felt something was different. He could listen to sounds more clearly and his vision seemed slightly finer. His body felt a bit disorienting because his movements didn't seem to line up with the usual. He had the sense that his body had gotten somewhat stronger.

Remembering the mysterious feeling he had felt earlier, Will wasn't quite sure what exactly happened to him. Whatever that feeling was it seemed to have improved his physical capacity by a considerable amount and his mind began to rapidly connect the dots and speculate about the cause of the phenomenon. Did he accidentally consume some magical medicine from the Realm on Earth and it actually released its effects now? Though fitting the symptoms it seemed to be completely implausible. Sighing when he couldn't think of any plausible explanations, Will decided to head out and finish the third and final test before breaking his head on this serendipitous opportunity.

Back at the trial grounds, the presiding elder of the trial had taken away that mysterious doll. In its place was a simple plank of ancient red wood the size of a door. On the door was the symbol 'A' carved in using three violent sword strikes, piercing the wood and leaving behind marks of trauma and an atmosphere that intimidated any gaze which fell on it. The carving contained hints of a profound kind of sword intent with an essence similar to roiling oceans waves in a choppy storm.

When the participants had all regathered in front of the ancient object, the Elder handed each of them a miniature plank the size of a palm and a wood carver. "All participants will get an hour to carefully study the sword mark of the ancestral heritage plank. After an hour of observation you will be provided another hour to make a carving in the plank in your hands trying to replicate the intent. This is a test of comprehension and will be judged by the quality of your plank."

After another snap of his fingers, every participant understood that their time for comprehension had begun. Will calmed himself down first and meditated inward for a minute, reaching a state of relaxed focus before turning his gaze outwards towards the ancient sword carving. The three sword strikes forming the letter A had a magical effect within them, one that didn't make much sense in its manifestation as a physical reality on Earth. Will was puzzled by that discovery and wondered if this was because of the existence of the Realm of Continuity. Several questions popped up wondering how true the so called understood laws of our universe really were.

He soon discarded those cloudy thoughts and began to analyze the construct of the sword marks themselves. His first impression was one of being hit head on by a piercing formless pressure simply from gazing at the marks, but after the previous test Will's resistance to this kind of pressure had improved significantly. He felt a powerful ocean wave wash over him and his first guess was that the marks were some form of intent to replicate the power of the storm.

Will allowed his body to be washed over by the intent until his body began to slowly adjust to this new normal. His eyes settled on the mark almost dazed as his pupils slowly widened and he stopped blinking. Without realizing it, Will's heart began to slow down but not by a lot. A careful observer of the scene would realize that Will's heart beat, breathing and other involuntary behaviors had begun to resonate with the tyrannical ocean wave effect of the sword carving.

"How marvelous! The lad Will has already approached harmony with the sword intent!" A High Elder exclaimed in whispers. Till now Will's slow and steady performance had earned that elder's gratitude, but this was the first time the Elder considered Will a potential talent. Will wasn't the first to obtain this state, however. Oliver had already synchronized completely with the wooden plank. His body sat sharp like a powerful sword ready to bring out the power of the stormy gale.

About thirty minutes later, Will finally achieved the state Oliver had much earlier. The synchronicity with the intent flooded him with complex emotions. He could finally understand how powerful a real sword strike with sufficient power could be, how dominating, how majestic! In front of the sword intent, Will felt like he was a tiny animal, a prey in line to be slaughtered. The more he comprehended about the sword move, the more complex it seemed to appear.

He began to contemplate on the nature of the ocean imprinted within his mind. The waves crisscrossed each other, intersecting, merging and reemerging. Within the complicated maneuverings within those waves, Will suddenly seemed to gaze at some simpler building blocks that merged to form this magnificent image. Three strokes combining to form a storm. His eyes glistened as his perception began to single onto a single stroke instead of the combined effect of the three strokes hitting him together. This was exceptionally difficult to do, because he was essentially imitating the final merged form of the sword intent, however he was no where knowledgeable enough to split it into its constituents. However, as he stressed his perception deeper, he finally managed to plow through the merged intent and began to peek behind the veil.

He suddenly had an epiphany. Each sword mark had a separate sword intent. Just as he was about to observe the constituent depths, the Elder clapped and addressed everyone, announcing that the time for comprehension had come to an end. He swiftly gathered the Ancestral Heritage Plank and left the trial ground. Will sighed, he had just grasped on hints of the constituents. One of the sword mark seemed to have a fluid characteristic like water. The other had the feeling of a breeze, smooth but consistent. The final one was the most impactful one that was overflowing with absolute force.

Will closed his eyes to remember the feeling he had then. He carefully grabbed the sculpting tool and the plank and tried to reenter the state of synchrony he had with the sword intent earlier. After some preparation, his body suddenly gained a vast quality in his aura and he obtained a rather forceful presence. He slowly began carving three broad strokes in the style of an 'A' symbol.
