Chapter 41 - 1st Recursion: Heir (8)

By virtue of how susceptible the court was at that moment, the trial was suspended indefinitely despite the protests of the nobles within the audience. The details regarding the Memory Sphere were also concealed.

None of the judges said a single word once they came out of the conference room. Although the pleading of the Nobles was loud enough to deafen their ears, they didn't heed their wishes to be informed.

As for Ilya, she was kept under the custody of the Court of Justice. However, that choice was born out of the worst of circumstances.

The second that Leahmir Dantalion touched her, Ilya fell unconscious. Even after a week's worth of slumber, she had yet to awaken. The people around her were beginning to harbor anxieties in their hearts, fearing that her condition might have turned for the worse.

"Viscountess Dantalli--"

"Please reserve your pleasantries, Lord Vanerheim. I am currently here as a physician, not a noble."

Count Luka Vanerheim immediately bowed his head, "I apologize, doctor. The Chief Justice is asking for you to keep him posted about the Lady's condition. Please inform him the very second that Lady Ilya awakens."

"I understand. You can take your leave."

Without saying another word, Vanerheim left the room. Upon his egress, he saw that Viscount Kedrick Yaverneil was standing outside, waiting for him.

"What did she say?" Yaverneil asked, "Were there any improvements?"

Vanerheim sighed and put his hands in his pocket, saying, "None of the sorts. Lady Gertrude still hasn't opened her eyes."

Following their short conversation was a period of quietude. They both sighed as they faced the door once more. The two then looked at each other, giving each other a nod as they walked off towards different directions.

They weren't even a couple of meters into their walk when the door suddenly burst open. The two men turned around and saw one of the nurses frantically choosing which path to take. Vanerheim approached the nurse, questioning her right away.

"What's the matter? Did something happen to Lady Gertrude?"

The nurse flinched upon hearing his voice, hurriedly responding with, "My Lord, she's awake! Lady Gertrude is awake! I was to--"

Vanerheim and Yaverneil didn't even let the nurse finish speaking and ran to the room as fast as they could. They forthwith saw the physicians and nurses crowding on one side of the bed. Meanwhile, Leahmir Dantalion was alone on the other side, prepared to assist Ilya the second she was asked to.

Hearing the noblemen's footsteps, Dantalion raised her hand to stop them from approaching. They understood the signal, hence they remained standing by the doorway. After a second, Vanerheim remembered the Chief Justice's order so he left without a second thought.

Yaverneil only watched as his companion sauntered away, returning his gaze to Ilya once the man was out of sight.

"Lady Gertrude, can you hear my voice?" Dantalion queried, making sure that her voice was as mellow as possible.

Since Ilya didn't answer, Dantalion didn't raise another question lest being a bother to Ilya. Letting Ilya adjust to the surroundings was her top priority.

The softest of whimpers escaped Ilya's lips, alerting the people around her. She placed a hand on her head and shut his eyes. She let out a lungful of air, then opened her eyes anew after a few seconds.

At the outset, Ilya's vision was completely blurry. She could only see rough shadows, making it difficult for her to distinguish what she was supposed to be seeing. For that reason, she closed her eyes once again.

On the other hand, Dantalion gave the physicians and the nurses a nod. They all went to work, leaving Leahmir Dantalion to tend to Ilya's needs without a companion.

"Are you in pain somewhere?" Dantalion asked, "Please tell me. I am here to help ease your pain."

Regrettably, she still didn't get an answer from Ilya. But the young physician kept her patience, and instead, waited for Ilya to initiate the conversation. By good fortune, she didn't have to wait for long.

Slowly opening her eyes, Ilya happened to see Dantalion's countenance foremost. Feeling the dryness of her throat, she gulped. Ilya proceeded to rise to a sitting position.

Dantalion immediately noticed her struggle, so she assisted Ilya and put a pile of pillows directly behind her back. Latterly, she procured a glass of water.

"Here, Lady Gertrude,." Dantalion said as she held the glass in front of Ilya.

With her trembling hands, Ilya tried to get the glass. Withal, she couldn't stop her hands from trembling. She looked at Dantalion and shyly nodded her head.

"No worries, Lady. I'll help you."

Dantalion then did as she said, placing the glass back on the bedside table afterward.

"Are you feeling better now, Lady Gertrude?"

Ilya drew a deep breath and replied, "Y-yes, all thanks to you."

"That's good to know. Do you feel any pain somewhere?"

"I feel a bit sore, but I'm fine overall."

"Alright, then we'll be checking your vitals. Please bear with it for a while."

Sans waiting for Ilya's reply, Dantalion participated in preparing the medical equipment. Ilya, who was left alone, observed the quiet ruckus around her. Soon enough, she met the eyes of the man standing from afar. She readily curtsied at him by bowing her head. Her gesture was returned without a delay.

As she was about to take her gaze off of Yaverneil, Ilya heard several footsteps nearing the room. The man also noticed it, prompting him to look in the direction of where the footsteps were coming from.

In less than no time, the Chief Justice, together with the other judges, entered the room. The group came closer to Ilya on the double, stopping a shy of a meter away from the bed.

"Lady Gertrude, it brings me joy to know that you're finally awake." The Chief Justice announced as he lowered his head afore Ilya.

"It's a pleasure to know that you are concerned for me, Your Honour. What brings you here?"

Prior to responding, the Chief Justice gave his companions a brief glance.

"Pardon my rudeness, Lady Ilya Gertrude. I'm aware that you have just awakened, but I cannot put off the matter any further."

"Please do speak."

"The Emperor has recognized Your Grace as the heir to the Gertrude Dukedom."
