The battle was already underway. The people that had attacked Rebecca and her group had been ambushed. Many died in the ambush, but there were still several left. After the initial explosions from the mines, the enemy stopped rushing into their deaths. They had some clue about what was going on, figuring that going past a certain threshold caused an explosion.
So, they stopped their assault and instead began bombardments of various elemental attacks. At least, that was what was supposed to happen. The moment they tried to bombard the area, they found themselves swarmed with horrors, unlike anything they had seen before. The things had humanoid bodies, but the head was one sizeable gaping mouth with razor-sharp teeth and a long elastic tongue.
