Even after working out plans to take care of and look after Don, she still needed to take custody of Donathan. Rebecca hired a lawyer and explained to her lawyer how Don came upon her. At first, the lawyer didn't believe her. She thought the woman was crazy, but when the lawyer looked into Donathan, he realized Rebecca wasn't crazy. Perhaps, Don was a victim of some kind of abuse and managed to get away only to come across Rebecca.
When the Lawyer looked into Rebecca, he found out that Rebecca was an upstanding citizen. No criminal records graduated top of her class in high school and had a master's in accounting. It made sense that she became an accountant, but she quit her field of work for some reason. When the Lawyer asked her why Rebecca explained herself. The Lawyer felt like Rebecca was more than suited to be Don's caretaker.
