Chapter 22 - (Mid)Night 4

Don led the woman towards his bike, which was parked outside. The woman was a bit confused because they were leaving the outpost, so she asked. "Where is this person?"

"In Harris." Don replied, which caused the woman's brow to raise curiously. "You mean in San Antonio?" The woman asked, and Don nodded.

"You drove all the way over here?" The woman asked another question, and Don nodded once again. "I see..." The woman muttered. She didn't expect to be leaving the outpost. In fact, it looked like she didn't want to. "I am sorry, but I can't go with you." She stopped just as they reached the gate. Don stopped and turned back towards the woman. "Why?" He asked as his eyes narrowed.

"Because... I can't go out there." She replied with a shake of her head.

Don didn't have time to beat around the bush, so he asked, "Is someone after you?" The woman's eyes grew wide with surprise. How did he know? "How?" She paused before nodding to his answer.

"Yes. A group of people, in fact. They don't know I am here, but they have people all over Texas. I just so happen to be able to lay low in this little outpost. So if they were to find me here, it would be problematic." The woman answered.

"Then you have nothing to worry about." Don added, which caused the woman's brow to rise as he turned on his heel.

"Because I'll kill anyone that gets in my way of saving her." Don's sheer conviction could be felt within the thrum of his vocals.

"I see..." The woman murmured.

She could tell that the person he was trying to save was essential to him. However, A part of her told her not to follow him, yet in her mind, she felt she did not have a choice. She followed Don to the gate, and when they arrived, one of the inside guards looked over him.

"Didn't you just come through?" The guard inquired with confusion as to why the man was now leaving. He saw the woman behind him and smirked. "I see. Nevermind. Have a good time."

He misunderstood what was going on. He wasn't informed that Don was looking for a doctor. He only saw Don had entered the gate a while ago. Don and the woman exited the outpost and headed over to his bike. "Wait, you came here on this?" The woman inquired, and Don nodded. "Yes, now get on."

Don stopped moving for a moment and put his arm out to stop the woman from moving as well. "Wait." Don stated. His eyes shifted left and right.

He heard treading in the shadows. "Fucking undead..." Don grumbled as he withdrew his S&W's, but before he could fire upon the shadowy figures that moved into the searchlights, they were gunned down by the guards and patrols. Don looked back at the guards at the gate. One of them tipped their hat to him, and he nodded to the guard with thanks before holstering his weapons and moving towards his bike.

"Let's go."

The woman was reluctant to even get on the bike, but she did so anyway. "Hold on tight. The ride won't be a pleasant one." Don stated, and the woman held onto him as tight as possible. She even trembled a bit in fear. It was almost as if her earlier bravado was just a front, or maybe she was just scared to ride a bike, which she had never done in her life.

Don turned on the bike, revved the engine, clutched the shift, and swung the bike with a one-eighty before zooming off. The headlight and the moonlight was the only source of light on the road. The woman squinted her eyes as tightly shut as possible out of fear since they were zooming past stalled vehicles, street lights, street signs, undead, and bugs. The speed-o-meter was steadily rising above a hundred miles per hour.

Don continued to weave through obstacles. 'I'm coming, April. Just hang in there.' Don muttered internally.

"Oooh... I wonder what brought Don here..." A refined masculine voice filled with pure sinister and vile purred forth. His beady eyes stared at the gate that was closing. Slick-back hair and dressed somewhat nicely, the man fixed his tie. A shade of lipstick in the form of a kiss was visible on his left cheek.

"Regardless... I am sure sweet little April is still alive as well. I doubt Don would let her die so easily. It's only a matter of time before we are reunited, my dearest April." A sinister snicker escaped the lips of the vile man as he made his way toward the main building.

"Subject found!" A disorientated voice spoke as the person pressed a finger to their earpiece. Their eyes looked through the night-vision goggles they had on. "Subject was coming out of Texas Capitol here in Austin. She left with a man by bike. They are heading South-West towards San Marcos." The voice added.

"Good work. We will station a crew right outside Wayside on I-35S. Please standby." A voice came through the earpiece. "Roger." The person replied.

"C-Can you slow down a bit..." The woman asked Don over the roars of the wind.

Don ignored her.

In fact, he wanted to go faster, but the bike was already at top speed. Alas, the woman got her wish since don kissed his teeth as he saw a significant blockade of vehicles was in place. He knew this wasn't there before. So someone must have set it up after he passed through. Moreover, the blockade extended far beyond normal blockades. Don swiftly shifted the bike with a sharp turn to cause it to skid to a stop. When the speed was acceptable, he would use his foot to keep the bike from falling over. The woman screamed with terror as she held onto Don tightly.

Bright lights illuminated the field around Don all at once, which caused him to turn his head and bring his arm up to shield his eyes from the light. His eyes needed to adjust to the brightness before lowering his arm. The woman had her eyes shut tightly so the sudden exposure to bright light didn't hurt her as much. She managed to adjust a bit before Don did.

A loud voice boomed over them as if coming from a microphone.

"Release the woman and step away!"

The woman shivered at the sound of the voice. Don could feel her shaking, which caused him to look at her and then back to the shade of a figure standing on top of hummer. Several other hummers were lined up along with a few buses. Don could see several people armed and ready to fire upon him.

"So... these are the people after you?" Don muttered.

"I knew I shouldn't have left. They had someone posted outside of the outpost... I told you they have people all over Texas on watch!" The woman exclaimed with fear and worry. She clearly didn't want to go with those people, and those same people were in Don's way.

"Look here... I don't have time for whatever the hell you people have going on. You want the woman, that's fine. You can have her...." Don remarked as he glared at the group of people taking cover in and behind the vehicles. Some were positioned in front of him as well. The woman shifted her attention towards Don.

"What!?" The woman exclaimed.

"But... only after I have her save, April. If any of you decide to get in my way..." The light in Don's eyes slowly started to fade. He could feel the flow of his blood rushing and the beating of his own heart. It wouldn't be too long before he could hear the rush of his blood and the rapid thumping of his heart, just like before. He withdrew both of his S&Ws and aimed them forward. His barrel aimed at two of the group before him. "You will die." Don finished with clear conviction as if he were making a vow.

There was a moment of silence before a burst of laughter could be heard. "You, an alone man, will kill a group of highly trained soldiers? With what, two pistols? Yeah, right, quit the shit and hand over the woman before you get killed." The man's booming voice spoke over again as if he were speaking through a microphone.

"Umm... I don't know who you are, but..." The woman was going to speak up but fell silent when she heard several gunshots going off. Don's movements were too swift for her to perceive. His movements were giving off an after-image illusion effect. It was like Don had five more arms with guns in hand. Moreover, she didn't even perceive it whenever Don went to reload. It was like Don's mags were endless.

"Fire! Fire!" The man shouted, and gunfire was returned, but most of the soldiers up front were taken out by then.

"Take the handlebars!" Don shouted, which caused the woman to wake from her trace.

"Umm, what?" The woman questioned with a confused look.

Don kissed his teeth and stopped firing to take the handlebars of his bike and shift the clutch to maneuver around the barrage of bullets. The sudden burst of movement caused the woman to hold onto Don tightly.

"Take the fucking handlebars, and when I tell you to shift left or right, you do it. Do you understand!?" Don shouted to get her attention.

"But... I don't know how to drive a bike..." The woman responded timidly.

"You don't have to! Just steer in the direction I tell you! Now take the handlebars, our we both die!" Don exclaimed. The woman was confused and scared but didn't want to die. No one really wanted to die, right? So, she took the handlebars.

"When I tell you to brake, brake. When I tell you to accelerate, then accelerate. Understand?!" Don exclaimed over the roars of the bullets, and the woman gulped heavily. She could understand the basics of braking and accelerating. "I'll shift the clutch while taking out these men!" Don added as he began firing upon the many soldiers that were left.

He would tell the woman to brake and accelerate at certain times while also steering left and right. Don used his body mass to tilt the bike to avoid the barrage of bullets flying around him. The soldiers were confused about how Don and the woman were weaving through bullets like ghosts. The woman had her eyes shut tightly out of fear but still followed instructions when given.

Eventually, the fire-fight died down, and an opening had been made since there was no longer a group of soldiers in the way, nor were there people firing endlessly upon Don and the woman. Don holstered his weapons and placed his hands on the handlebars, more specifically over the woman's, which caused her eyes to flare open.

"I'm taking back control!" Don shouted as they swerved hard left to race straight toward the opening.

Don revved the engine and popped a sweet wheelie while driving over the dead soldiers to break through the blockade. Once he did, he pushed the bike down onto the front wheel and raced down the street.

"God, Dammit!" The booming voice from earlier shouted and slammed the microphone into the ground. "Sir, shall we pursue?" A soldier came up beside him.

"Get me a casualty count. Also, I want to know who the hell that guy was! Gather all the equipment and finish off any bodies so they don't become undead. We are heading back to base!" The man gave his order before watching Don race off with the woman they were after. "This isn't over, not by a long shot. In this world, we are the ones who make the rules." The man gruffly stated.

"Um... I think you can..." The woman was trying to say something so she could free her hands. "No. We will not stop. Hold it in or something." Don thought she had to use the restroom. This caused her to blush from embarrassment, and she would have hit him if she could. "Asshole..." The woman muttered. In truth, she wanted to know more about what had happened. How he did what he did and who he was. After all, she didn't even know the man's name.

"I guess we didn't need to step in." Jessica remarked from a rooftop off in the distance.

"I figured we wouldn't, but.... what was that?" Ion added while still looking out over the field of many dead soldiers.

Ion was standing right beside Jessica, who was sucking on a lollipop. "Mmm.. not sure. Do you think that was his ability?" Jessica asked while looking up at Ion. Ion shook his head. "I had some time to think about it before. I am not too sure what his ability was. How he moved when we fought him and how he moved here is completely different. I have seen many abilities, especially ones that enhance reflex and movement speed, but this goes behind what I have seen. If this was his base ability, then what he did against us is most likely the evolution of that." Ion explained his train of thought.

"Evolution? Then why not just use that? He could have killed all of them without wasting a single bullet." Jessica inquired, and Ion shook his head.

"I'm not sure. However... there is a possibility that he doesn't even know how to operate his ability, just like how we didn't. At first, we didn't know how to use it, and the way it is used differs between each person. They just have to find out how just like we did." Ion answered, and Jessica sighed.

"So, we got our asses handed us by a guy that doesn't even know how to use his ability?" Jessica seemed depressed, and in all honesty, it sounded depressing.

"Indeed, but imagine what it would be like if he knew how to use it. To turn it off and on as if flicking a switch. He could become unstoppable..." Ion stated, and Jessica was inclined to agree. "You have a point. He seemed pretty unstoppable when we fought him. The only reason we are still alive is because of that girl. I assume that is why you wanted to help him?" Jessica asked out of curiosity.

"It is. I would rather have that guy on our side instead of against us. If anything, he could be the key to bringing an end to all of this." Ion answered.

"Well, for now, let's go home. I am getting pretty tired." Jessica yawned, and Ion agreed. She took hold of Ion before a white light illuminated them. Once it died down, they were gone.
