It took my sister some time, maybe a lot of time but she stopped crying. Her sobbing down to sniffles which had been a tattletale sign since she had been an infant that her crying session had come to an end.
Whenever Catherine cried in front of me, it always hurt me physically, and I always tried to take away the problem for her. Only this time, I was incapable in every way of doing so. The realization of this incapability made me compare myself to Marilyn. She would have been able to take Catherine and herself to safety.
I shifted away from her slightly, and ignored her attempt to get closer. Taking her chin in my hand, I angled it upwards to get a look on her face, at least as much as I could in the dark.
I spoke gently, "I understand that we are in a situation that feels very doomed. But I promise you, dear one, we will get out of this. I will make sure that you get out of this. Do you understand me?"
