Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

I've just knocked my boyfriend unconscious with a bolt of lightning. No, wait a minute… I need to rephrase that sentence. I just knocked my ex-boyfriend unconscious with a bolt of lightning.

Here I stand, completely shocked to my very core as I stare at the sizzling wound on the side of his stomach, just beneath his ribcage.

The wound is slowly oozing out blood and smoke, filling the air with the nauseating smell of burnt flesh and the metallic scent of blood.

I want to be worried, really I do, but right now all I can think is… my hand has fucking lightning coming out of it!

Slowly, I raise my head to gaze at my cousin whose eyes are wide and mouth hanging agape. Katrina gapes at the body slumped in the middle of the room, unable to come up with a single word of reassurance, and a minute or two passes before she peeks at me.

Blinking, she recovers slowly when our eyes make contact and lets out a strangled laugh. One hand runs through the strands of her silky straight hair, while the other rests on her hip as she remarks dryly.

"At least you didn't kill him."

*~*~*~*

A day before the accident…

I'm cuddling underneath a blanket with a bowl of popcorn on my legs, enjoying the last few days of summer holiday before it all ends. Come next week, classes will commence and so begins the start of junior year in what teenagers like to refer to as… hell.

Grabbing a handful of popcorn I stuff them into my mouth and stare at the tv screen in excitement, ignoring the rumbling of thunder and the tap, tap sound of our neighbour's tree hitting the upstairs window at the back of our house.

I'm supposed to be out with my friends and boyfriend but blew them off to catch the new episode of the horror drama - Walking Dead. Settling more beneath the thick cotton blanket I grab another handful of popcorn just as a groaning noise pierces through my thoughts, a frown draws my brows together when I turn slightly to look over my shoulder.

Did I imagine it? The thought echoes in my mind.

Seeing nothing out of the ordinary, I shrug it off and turn back to my movie. I have all the lights turned off, well all except for the one in the kitchen. I left it on to illuminate the living room so I don't stub my toe or hurt myself trying to manoeuvre around for more popcorn.

I stuff more popcorn into my mouth and sit up in excitement when the scene slowly got to a gruesome part. Just when things were about to get interesting I hear the turning of the lock on the front door and freeze… no one is meant to be home just yet.

Looking towards the front door I swallow down my saliva and flinch, pressing a hand to my chest when a sudden clap of thunder rumbles through the sky and scares the shit out of me. Standing quietly, apprehension fills my bones as I tiptoe towards my brother's baseball bat which he left just lying anywhere, again.

Slowly but carefully I picked it up, pressing it close to my chest. If this intruder thinks I'm going to just let him make a horror movie of my life, then he had better think twice.

Breathing in and out, I swallow nervously as the ghastly sounds from the TV added a scary background noise to the stimulating situation. I raise the bat over my head and step into the hallway, quickly running across the room on my toes to stand behind the door and wait in silence when it begins to groan open.

I glance down at the black boots stepping over the threshold and hold my breath, feeling a tiny bit of excitement and fear when the person steps in and closes the door behind them. As the intruder steps further into the room I frown, taking note of the person's silhouette.

A female? I question in puzzlement.

Shrugging it off, I follow as quietly as I can and was about to bust some brains when the intruder sharply turns around and releases a piercing scream, her sudden shriek causes me to drop the bat in fright with a scream of my own.

My pounding heart is the only thing I can hear, at least not until hysterical laughter cuts through my frazzled thoughts. Staring at the intruder, I'm surprised to find her doubled over, a fist pounding on her knee as she laughs uncontrollably.
